    Hiya Guys,

My Bro has agreed to solder the lamp, I have googled and emailed many folk but none willing to attempt the repair :-(

My Bro reckons plumbers solder will be fine as it will not need to be gotten too hot and damage/Mark the tank. As the gap between the tank and the tap thingy is almost none existent it should be fine. My Bro actually is a very accomplished welder and has many accolades to his name, I do believe he had something to do with welding the Hydro Scope thingy in Switzerland, Indeed he has been in the welder of the year finals. So Fingers crossed.

However.... Can any one of you guys point me in the right direction.. I need a complete and comprehensive repair/Refurbish kit for Dads lamp.

I have looked on Ebay but not sure what I need, they range from 3 quid to loads of quid!!

Money here is not necessarily the point!! I just need the right stuff and all of it to be able to refurbish the lamp.

    thanks Guys . Oly

I don't think he did it all by himself!! The point I was making was if Bro reckons plumbers solder will do the trick Who am I to argue! I have my own area of expertise, welding is not one of them. Oly

I've used plumbers solder before without any problems! I make sure that it contains lead though...

For a rebuild, get a pack from the fettlebox for the seals, mantles from e-bay or base-camp, vapouriser from base-camp (or from e-bay - there's a seller on e-bay from Korea (I think) that sells a custom vapouriser). Basically, between base-camp and fettlebox you should be sorted!

P.S. The fettlebox's pump leathers are the best I've tried!

Welder of the year??.. ... Sounds like he's the man for the job then!!!.. ;)
I would give the chaps at the base camp stoves a ring and speak to them, very helpful and got years of experience.. :) :)
    Whoops, crossed lines..sorry chaps!!

Pods, as much as base-camp are great, the pump leathers they sell aren't - likewise the pump leathers that you will get on e-bay from pretty much everyone except the fettlebox.

I've bought seals from other sellers in the past when I wanted them ASAP and always regretted not having bought the big box from fettlebox so I didn't need to!!

The Tilley lamp company still sell vaporisers and pump washers via their web site. Original equipment and usually better and cheaper than some of the "new old stock" stuff on ebay.

I'd have to strongly disagree ,the current vaporisers that tilley sell with the hammered type end are poor compared wih new old stock ones ,especially those in the old brown packaging,,,,I'd always look for new old stock ones...

I've commented on this subject before. In my experience, even though the older Tilley vapourisers are manufactured and finished better than the current ones, I have had no problems with the many new vapourisers I've used.

    Cheers

In general I expect that the modern Tilley product will work as well as an old one. However I have heard from several people that a new one they bought did not work but Tilley replaced it without fuss. The difference is mainly a matter of quality control. Modern examples are not tested but just manufactured, stocked and shipped. The old stock vaporisers made in Hendon were all test burnt before being packed for stock and this is why older types have a discoloured top. This factory test is also why the older ones are consistantly functional.

The other consideration is that older types have a brass fitter screwed to the steel tube and the later types have a crimped in steel fitter. The brass foot is more in keeping with the look of an older lamp. ::Neil::
