For the purists and those of a nervous disposition, look away now!!!! My eldest daughter has recently re-discovered the joys of camping, having bought a camper her thoughts turned to when she was a girl and the hours spent in the awning of our caravan listening to the gentle hiss of a Tilley lamp. Have you got a spare one I could have? says she. Now Sarah is a big fan of all things pink and sparkly, she even has a pink 'Aga' in her kitchen, much to her husbands delight I might add They'd ordered a bog standard beige one as he'd said NO to a pink one in the shop, when she got home she phoned the shop and told them to change the colour. I set about fettling a Tilley X246A that I found under the bench in the shed. My thoughts turned to an X246B that Kev Crabtree, of CCS Newark Stove Wanging Champion fame, did for his little girl a couple of years back. Below are some pics of the finished article. I was very pleased with how it came out and needless to say she was highly delighted, unlike her husband who's reaction was unprintable here
Can't.... Look.... Away..... AAARGGHH!! Is that a Rhinestone? Gasp!! Just to have an example of a Tilly (even a Pink one) in the collection here, is something I've been hoping for, for at least 2 years now. Here in Winnipeg, they are not commonplace. But... patience is the key here, and one never knows what they will find around the next corner. Your example is, uh,... er,... in good condition from what the image shows. I flatly refuse to purchase lanterns on the internet, and rely completely on what I can find at garage(boot) sales, flea markets, and certain second-hand and antique shops. There aren't that many collectors here in Manitoba (but there are a couple of them out there somewhere..), so there's lots of goodies to go around. Going to go sit quietly and recover now. Hello Henry, this lantern looks like it was made for Lady Penelope! You must have enjoyed winding up your son in law! Jeff.
Fred tilley will be turning in his grave if he could see that pink lamp Henry, not what i call sympathic restoration that Henry But why not its your lamp and made me smile and your daughter i bet. Good to see it here, lamp collecting\collectors get so serious most of the time cheers pete
I think it is more to do with a childs love. I am a purist myself but if my little grand daughter asked for a pink poka dot lantern ,I would be making it right now. I love my two grand children more than life itself. Dan
Dan Kehoe, a collector I know from another forum made this custom lantern for his daughter. Fount is a US Mil-Spec and the rest is a Coleman 228E with a black Sears-Coleman ventilator. Nice job from a rather creative fella. He dubbed it the Lil-Spec after his daughter Lily Glenn
