What is the proper mantle for a 1960s Optimus 930 300 CP lantern? It seems that it comes delivered with 250 CP mantles (Optimus #4). There are #4A mantles available which I think are 350 CP. While I would prefer to stick with Optimus mantles, do any other brand/type mantles work OK? Do any Coleman mantles work? Finally, is there a reflector hood that fits the 930? I did not see one listed in the parts lists in the reference library. Other Optimus lanterns (like the 200) seem to list a reflector. Thanks, Dan
I find that the 930 works well with the Optimus 350cp mantles (#4a). Theoretically it should work with the 250cp mantles, if it is fitted with a 200/250cp jet. As far as brand goes, any 300-350cp round shape mantles should work. The reflector shade from the Santrax 150cp (or any of the hord of brands in that size) lantern fits well. You have to remove the handle to fit it, but it sits well once it's on.
Thanks Nils, I checked and the jet has "200" stamped on it, so 250cp I presume? Are you saying that with the 250cp jet the lantern should work with OK with the 4, 4a or 300-350 cp mantles? Any issues with using the bigger mantles? Can the 930 handle a bigger jet? Is it advisable or just leave well enough alone? Michel, That is a nice shade, I like the contrasting colors. I'll check around and try to locate one (unless you know where they are available). That's a very nice 930, especially that partially frosted globe Dan
The 930 can handle a 350cp jet, but my personal preferance is to have a 200/250 jet in it. All the burner dimensions are the same as an Optimus 200, so this seems appropriate. I would probably still fit an Optimus 4a mantle, as they seem to be very 'flexible' and suit many applications. I have tried the #4 and my personal opinion is that they seem to be a fraction small (they shrink a lot). If you have the parts then it might be worth experimenting and finding your own best combination.
I scrapped a faulty electric lamp of common design. Found that the top reflector fitts a 930 snuggly right of. Not a original, but still a reflector. Dont know its heatresistance yet, but the 300w halogen bulb would have created some heat.
