Finally got hold of one of these little beauties, totally unfired and with a full complement of spares. Unusual heat shield sat at the base of the glass, not seen that before. Also does anyone know what the wire spring clip thing is meant to hold on the left hand side in the case? Second picture from last.
Gratulations Matthew These lamps looks fantastic in unfired condition like yours. Awesome with the box-kit too They did - but dont hang on the trees anymore. I still have one of these on my wishlist. Claus C
One of the best. I have three BW 929B's, two of those in NOS condition like yours. The heat shield is standard on all 829B's. The spring clip is a holder for the split shade. I have never seen these offered for sale but they do exist. These lamps operate with a 350 or 250 cp jet aswell.
The "split-type" lamp shade for the Bundeswehr Petromax lanterns never went into production. The first image shows most likely an adapted Vapalux shade. The second image shows a home-made shade as pictured on Torsten's site . We could sell lots of these if they were available :-) Erik
https://youtu.be/S2gmMTqB-V0 Interesting. So the box was designed for them but never issued? This video shows one being removed from a Bundeswehr kiste with the workings of the lamp and accessories being explained.
The shade on the youtube-video cant be original. It uses a locking device from a kitchen cabinet door. Claus C
This also is a self-made shade. I think it is just a regular matt finish shade cut in half. Nice work, I know several people who did this in different ways. But the shade never went into production for the Bundeswehr. Erik
Ya, hence why I never seen them for sale. Withstanding this, that is the purpose of the spring clip. A very handy idea. It's has got me thinking...
Thanks to all of you for your help and comments. Good to know that there isn't really anything missing, having said that it is missing the large instruction sheet off the inside of the door. But the same thing is included with the paper work. Perhaps I'll have to try making a split reflector.
Take a look at Leo's interesting post here. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/9527 Ill try and get a translation up sometime. Thanks again leo
That looks interesting, I don't know what any of the words say, but looking at the picture it appears to have a piece of metal riveted either side of the reflector and then the screw clamps the two pieces together with the reflector between them. Another good idea if I were to try making one. When did the patent run out.
Patents typically last for 15 years although this can vary in different counties. I am not aware that any last for longer. Anyway from 1958 you have no problem as it is long expired. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil, good to know. I wouldn't want the Petromax people coming for me. Now to spend the money on a nice shiney new reflector and then chop it in half.
The shade was not regularly patented. Wikipedia links the German word "Gebrauchsmuster" to Utility Model. The wordbook I looked into named it a Petty Patent. Seems to be the same thing. Erik
Since it is a military issued lantern I would not go for a shiney one. I guess a black/white would be better in style.
Petromax have actually stopped producing matte parts and accessories however they are still available with a matte shade being one of them. Send Stuga or Starklichttechnik a email.
ahum, maybe petromax never did make lanterns. E&G did, so did Graetz in Altena till they where consumed by Nokia (?). The brand name was petromax not the company. After Schott didn't renew the rights on the brand some students registered the name and now you can buy almost everything with the name petromax on it. Not completely true btw there was a time during the Altena period when there was a "petromax" company. The 250 (350 ?) "Bundeswehr" matt grey lantern was marked as such on the box.
Thanks for the comments, I'd love to get one of those black and white enamel ones. I saw one on eBay a while ago but it made a little more than I wanted to pay, probably quite cheap though now I have a lamp I want to put it on. If I got one of those I couldn't cut it in half ofcourse, so if I could get a matte one aswell I might be able to have ago at making the split one. I'd just like to have it filling that extra clip in the back of the case.
That's a real beauty of a lamp. Very nice pictures too! I am somewhat puzzled over the missing pre heater cup. I got my hands on a similar one (with some wear and tear) the other day and that one missed the cup too. Since I thought there should be a pre heater cup, I mounted one. Is that cup supposed to be there at all? If not, how do you pre heat with alkohol or burn a new mantle?
A fantastic looking and highly functional lamp I've got two of these myself, one NOS and the other a regular user. Surely one of my prefered lamps. They do not come with a preheat cup standard, - neither do my 828's from the Danish Civil defense, but i have installed one into my "user lamps"
