300 cp kerosene lantern. Made in 1934. All of them have a serial number stamped on the control wheel. This one of mine is number 481. 15 are known in captivity and from the range of numbers we think perhaps only 1000 were made. Evil beasts to light but all the known examples work well.
Holy cow Neil That is pressurelamp in a whole new way. How is this inventor thinking Would I like one of those I would light that everyday and dance. Claus C
Made to US patent 1964939 in 1931 to July 1934. The inventors and patentees of this were Walter B Engh and Cortland W Davies, both devotees of the Robinson Heath & Emmet school of engineering design. They are truly a mad design and difficult lamps to light and fettle. They were expensive at the time but they do work very well though. I do love to fire this one up. It is always tricky but very satisfying to get it right and blasting out a serious light. Pretty trouble free in action as well because I don't think I have ever had to use a pricker once it is running. ::Neil::
Hi there! A very lovely and most unusual Lamp there Mr. Mackburner !.... ...That design is very interesting indeed with the brass pipe on the outside there.........Gives it a look that reminds me of a 'gas lamp' in a way? Does the 'preston loop' thing finish in a kind of 'ball' similar to the ones on the Lux lanterns??? . .... ...I can't quite see from where I'm sitting
No these lamps don't have a Preston loop. Preston's design has a pricker running through the generator to partially block off the generator and force the fuel through the loop but this lamp does not have a built in pricker. The loop is just a simple U shape with a fitter at one end to lock into the upright fuel feed tube and a block at the other end with a jet. In fact the loop is the whole of the generator and not just a part of one as in a Preston type. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil for the extra info... .....Yes, I put 'preston loop' as I didn't know how else to describe it !!.... .......You say it's not easy to light and is that one of the reasons?......sorry to keep badgering away but have only fettled Tilleys and Vapalux types thus far and 'I Know Notthinng'.... . .....I feel a bit like the kid in the back of the car who keeps saying............" Are we nearly there yet?"...... Best wishes, PB
Hi PB, the problem with these lamps is that the pre-heaters are a bit wimpy and don't heat as much of the generator as they should. I find that giving it 2 goes with the pre-heater works every time. Only bad thing I find is that they take a hell of a lot of pumping to get going but like Neil says above, once they are going, they keep going. One of my favourite user lamps for sure.
....Hi Antony............Ah, yes I get what you mean about the pre heating .....thanks for that.... ....Mind you, I feel like that most mornings myself..
