This Geniol was made in Portugal by Hipolito.
It has the typical red/orange pump knob, the blue rapid lever and a black handwheel. Also the lantern is marked with "Lanterne". These all are signs für a Hipolito Production.

It is wrong to call this lamp a Geniol. Lanterne is a brand from FAMA in Portugal. Fama was a factory set up in 1940 by a Swedish company. We don't know which company that was but I suspect Optimus. They were originally a stove manufacturer but very probably included lamps in the range after WW2. Fama were bought out by Hipolito in 1956 and it is possible that the brand continued concurently with early Hipolito product. I have seen lanterns marked as Feuerhand and Lanterne which implies they were possibly made in Portugal for Nier. I would have thought these lamps pre date Geniol by some time and in any case Geniol is a German brand and these lamps are Portuguese. ::Neil::

I assume Leo got the name from the label which does say "Geniol". Is that just branding or is there a connection?

Looks like that was added after import. The type of label a retailer might use. The Lanterne brand is older than Geniol so maybe early lanterns were not custom marked in the factory but just had a label added after import. ::Neil::
