Tilley Guardsman comes alive!

    Finaly had a break in the weather and a chance to fire up the chrome Guardsman after its restoration and new seal kit. Faultless performance except for a small leak at the control valve. The only seal I didn't replace because the knob was too tight, and the only one that leaked! Would you believe it!! ](*,)
    Is there a knack to removing the knob other than brute force? Suggestions welcome.

    Which knob is it? The early ones screw on; the later ones pull off...

    A picture would help.

    ... If it's the one in your other post, it screws off anti-clockwise. Put some penetrating oil on it first. It should be able to be released by hand.

    Then take off the packing nut and dig out the old washers and replace.

    Use two pairs of pliers, one on the spindle and the other on the knob. To prevent damage to either, use, for example, leather strips in the jaws of the pliers. Works for me, every time... :thumbup:

    :thumbup: Thanks folks, just tried it, and it does unscrew like you said. The old washer simply crumbled,it had gone brittle like the rest, so a leak was inevitable.

    On the subject of knobs, I just received a Vapalux 300x army spec and this has the old maroon knob with the white 'V'. There is no screw on the end as with my 310. How does this come off? :?

    It screws off the shaft anti-clockwise. Use two pairs of pliers etc...
