I'm very new to lamp collecting so bare with me. I found a great looking lamp today, was wondering if its all original. Its a Coleman model 156 (as far as i can see) and has a 47 and a 4 stamped on which I assume means 1947. Any other info about this lamp and shade would be very appreciated!
In these circumstances, Norm, you need to report your post to the Mod/Admin team by clicking on the ! button at the bottom right of the post in question. They will then be able to put things right...
That appears to be a Colman pleated shade which is very collectable,The #355 glass globe is also very collectable. The #157 with the rust and big repairs are the down fall. It is a nice collectable lamp in good shape. The fact that rust has eaten all the way thru the steel bottom ruins it's value. The #157 is not a hard lamp to find on ebay so perhaps you could find a nice example to hang that great shade and globe on. Dan
Norm It is too bad that the fount has been compromised with a repair. You have the date correct. It is a Canadian Gasoline model but could be converted to Kerosene by putting a generator tip from a 200 series Coleman lantern Tip #6. Add a pre-heat cup. If the fount holds pressure with the repair. I would not burn gasoline in the lamp without an extensive look into the repair and a thorough proper fix. Gas is too volatile. You have found a shade that is, I believe an original "Sheer-Lite" or possibly parchment with what appears to have original plastic coat as well....VERY GOOD FIND. Can you say "Hen's Teeth" The glass globe is a nice find as well. I have a 156 Canadian 2/49 here and it begs that shade from you :-) 156 was made 1947-1949
I might add I use a #156 all summer long in my screen house with an Amish pleated shade. It is a totally Reliable source of light. Neighbors come in off the street from time to time and sit to chat. They never realize it is not electric until I show them. Dan
Thanks for the information Glenn! I had a feeling that lamp shade was rare and it indeed does have most of the original plastic coating. Everything does have a price my friend, so keep that it mind.
It's a 156, Dan - but having said that, I've no idea at all whether that makes a material difference with respect to rarity etc. The PLC indicates that the only difference between the two is the 156 doesn't have an integral pump whereas the 157 does - presumably that's why it's the 'deluxe' model...
There were three styles of this shade produced that I'm aware of. Yours is one. The two in the image below were called the "Empress" and the "Royal"(L-R). I don't know what name they used for the one you found. Bob
