Once again, I find myself tinkering with a turd (big sigh...)

This one appeared on eBay recently and spoke to me. It whispered in my ear, "David, I need a globe and you've got a spare one lying around. I'm cheap, buy me and make me whole again..." Those sweet words and the assurance from the eBay seller that it ran perfectly and that he'd listed it as 'spares or repair' only because the globe was missing was sufficient to make me enter a bid. He also said it passed lots of air which is, unfortunately, very true - 100% air and 0% fuel - hence the big brown *****r sits there hissing quietly to itself but does nothing else. :rage:

Having had a WWII Coleman stove apart for the same reason, I conclude that the piddling little hole at the bottom of the fuel/air tube is blocked. I've never had one of these out of a 275A for servicing so I'd be most grateful for any hints or tips anyone can offer. [-o<

Additionally, can anyone help me locate the two photographs someone posted of the 275 and 275A disassembled showing the differences inside. I saw these the other day when I didn't need them. Now that I do, I can't seem to find them anywhere...

The valve assembly from both is pictured near the bottom of this page:

Thanks, HD - they're the ones I was looking for! It also explains why any amount of searching here failed to turn them up... :D

    Also
Perhaps I'm not taking this seriously enough...

... ..... They also seem to have a tyre valve thrown in for good measure?....

    ...Hmmm....quite a few variables there... :-k

...Presumably the Schrader couldn't be a standard one as the seal would need to be oil resistant?. :-k

David, I thought 'piddling little hole' was the correct technical term for this particular abomination?

Yes, Pod, a schrader valve thrown in for good measure, cost saving at it's finest.

I wouldn't mind a 'mini turd' or 'turdette' (222), but I would have to find some way to make it run on Kerosene.

Well, I've got a couple but I recall they're silver grey rather than brown. Still sh!t though, although they do have a following on here.

I think you'd struggle to make them run on kero...

They did come in that brown at some point, as well as silver-grey and green. Seemingly the 226 or 229 with a 252A 0.0045" tip will burn Kero.

Anyway, you coined the term 'Turdette' over at CCS. [-(

    Hi David,
Got a 275 (first model) brand new in the box, and it will stay in the box! From all indications this is why they call it "The Big Brown Turd"! They just don't seem to work like are suppose to.....

From what I hear I think old coleman parts has a better quality schrader valve that wont be so obstreperous when starting up. That whole section of it is, shall we say, dodgy. I have 2 turds, one runs like a brand new 220, the other....well it goes fssssssss.

    Yes, just like mine!

I found a 'scrap' 275 which I started to dismantle earlier today. I thought I'd practice on that rather than my 'almost scrap' 275A. I couldn't find any easy way to slacken the gland nut - all my spanners were too large to get onto it so there the matter ended for now. Maybe it needs a special spanner or something.

The next problem was apparent though - the valve block seems to be sealed into the tank with some sort of 'goo' which has set rock hard. Bah!

I was suspicious about the 275 I have...came without globe and some evidence of out of control fire ( melted valve wheel), I found it easy to dismantle, replaced the Schraeder valve with a new one, new globe, new valve wheel, and new mantles...now it is extremely reliable and one of the quietest lanterns I have, very bright too.

What did you use to undo the gland nut? - that bent metal 'shroud' thing around the valve block is stopping me getting a spanner onto it. Perhaps I should simply forget practising disassembly on the 275 because the 275A I really need to fettle doesn't have the metal shroud.

Did the sealant 'goo' where the valve block screws into the top of the tank prove to be much of a problem? I'm planning to grip the valve block in a vice and turn the tank as I did with a Coleman stove I fettled some time ago. What should I use to replace the 'goo' when it comes to re-assembly and do I even need to?

...Hi David........You could always slap some 'Loctite' in there for good measure?....

......Your desciption matches to similar threadlocks I've seen before....sticky...etc....

No offence intended, but why do you use so many "...." when you write? You might end up with carpal tunnel syndrome.

    For example:

    "Hi David

You could always slap some 'Loctite' in there for good measure?

Your desciption matches to similar threadlocks I've seen before - sticky, etc. They withstand heat quite well."

    Cheers

But brand names don't require the use of apostrophes for emphasis. They're proper nouns though, so they need a capital letter but that's all; you would simply write it as Loctite and no more. For example:- I got some Castrol grease at Toolstation and used Swarfega to get it off my hands.

Not taking the piss, either - just advancing the use of correct written English in my own little way. Once a teacher; always a teacher. ;)

...Thank you for the lesson, I only got C.S.E. grade 1 in English.

...Yes, I Know about the use of.. ' .. and.. "....

This is an International forum and in my small way was trying to differentiate between a brand name and an other to some who may not be familiar with such..

At other times I have used it to try and highlight certain words...that's all....

I only ask so many questions because time after time words are used in a way that is sometimes incomprehensible to me...not because of bad grammar, but because of the subject matter...

...I can give examples but hesitate to for fear of maybe putting people on the spot...

... I am by my own admission 'Slow'...(Geddit?)

IIRC, that was equivalent to a GCE pass which was all I got.

Anyway, back to the Turd. It was too cold outside to do anything with it today but I think I might give it a polish tomorrow...

I've been working on a 275 today. It was on eBay last week and I won the auction and collected it. It kept flooding and catching fire so I decided to tear it down.

I struggled to get the valve out with a vise, so heated the valve a bit and then put it back in the vise and that helped. As for thread sealer, I don't usually put anything on it, but if I do I use loc tite.

The problem with mine ended up being the f/a tube was split. So if anyone has a spare let me know :)

As for the Schrader valves, they were only meant to be problematic on the 275, they came out with the 275a to correct that problem.

People are always calling it a turd and think it's called that because it's brown, but turd was actually coined by a guy over on ccf that got angry working on one...

David if you need to replace the Schrader valve let me know, I have a spare if you need it (in the UK)

    Hi David

Have done a couple of "Turds" recently & a couple of 275's as well , if you need a teflon Shrader let me know.

The goo can be loosened with a a big metric adjustable spanner & judicious/gentle application of heat dissapated around to top of the fount by copious sheets of wet kitchen paper! Some are easier than others though.

    This might be handy though.....

Thanks, Stu, but I was thinking more of a dark tan colour rather than black.

I'll let you know about the teflon Schrader valve but I don't think that's the root of the problem. Still, when I've gone to all the effort of getting it out, I might as well replace it. We'll see and thanks for your kind offer.

I think the goo was put there more to stop the valve unscrewing itself in use rather than sealing it. The other lantern I partially dismantled the other day (the 275A in question) just has a single blob on the valve/tank junction rather than all the way round the thread.
