Hello all, Some of you might know me from CCS and I have been to the Newark gathering a couple of times a few years back. Due to events the last couple of years I was unable to attend the gathering and it looks like I won't make it this year either But this is not the reason why I registered with CPL. The reason is this: Last week I received a very special lantern from a friend of mine. For the trained eye: Yes it's a fabled Tilley SDR!, but it's missing a few components, namely: it's side reflector, the handle and the glass globe is also missing. I first want to see if a can get a replacement glass. So my question is: Can anyone here provide me with the dimensions of the globe?(pref. in metric) Regards, Arjan.
Welcome Arjan Dont think we've conversed since BBL I'm sure you'll get the help you need, I don't own an SDR to be any help Cheers
OK, the correct globe for these is the No. 78 which is 117mm tall and 117mm external diameter. Now, just to muddy the waters a bit, there is an 'impostor' globe which is the No. 2081. This actually belongs to one of the Tilley gas lamps not the SDR even though it was being sold by Base-Camp a few years ago as such and I've the invoice to prove this. Anyway, the 2081 is 119mm tall by 115mm external diameter. It would be tempting to think that the 2081 needs just a couple of millimetres ground off the height to make it fit. That's not so on one of my SDRs (the 'English' one with pork-pie tank) because the 2081 glass is so thick that the internal diameter doesn't fit over the rim of the top reflector. However, it does (just) fit over the top reflector of my 'Dutch' SDR, presumably due to manufacturing tolerances. So you might have to reduce the height and also 'relieve' the internal diameter at the top by grinding some glass away there... You have been warned - yer pays yer money...
This shows the effect of fitting the 2081 globe into my pork-pie SDR. ...and this shows the same 2081 globe fitted into the Dutch SDR - a perfect fit without any grinding needed. However, due to the thickness of the glass, the semi-circular side reflector won't go in - without a little subtle bending, perhaps - which I didn't attempt. You can't win... Right, all this glass is going back into the correct lanterns or the box before something gets broken!
@Longilily You have to help me here, it's been a long time since BBL... @David Shouksmith Thank you for your info and mucking about with your glasses Good to see I have 2 options, becouse from what I have read the no78 glass is as 'rare as hens teeth', or so I've been told
Umm, I was 'Ray Al' back then, made some bits for you, don't remember all the bits but one was a modified pressure gauge with a plunger for some kinda Doughnut lamp think i modified the filler cap too, to take a bike pump of some kind. Yes Arjan, was a few years ago now P.s tagging doesn't work here yet, not till the new platform arrives like CCS
Ah yes, the pump nipple was broken and the pressure gauge was bust. You repaired the pump nipple with the NRV, which is located on the fillcap of the tank, and modified the pressure gauge I supplied so I could measure the pressure through NRV. You also plugged up the old pressure gauge to keep the old look intact. That was for the Ditmar doughnut lamp Then there is another matter of which pains me that it happened... Wim, would you kindly not steal my thread. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't! You may think what you think about BBL and Bart and much has probably been said, but please stop. And to be honost, I kind of feel like betraying him by joining this site, but I also believe that bygones can be bygones. So I don't appreciate the childish way you are acting now! Just don't! regards, Arjan
Yep ! That's me Bygones sounds good to me ! Be nice to leave all that stuff behind where it belongs Hope you enjoy CPL (give it a chance my friend ) Cheers
I will, that's why I reacted the way I did so that people know how I stand on the matter. I guess the fact that you are the only one reacting here tells the tale. Anyway, bygones I have a globe to hunt down(Which is harder than I expected). I can't post in the trading post yet, but if someone can help me get a hold of a glass for my SDR I would realy appreciate it
That's because there is no "matter" Arjan, except what you've made up in your own head. I can guarantee just about everyone here (including me) won't have a clue what you're on about. That's why you haven't received the response you want. Despite what you seem to think, this site had nothing to do with the end of BBL. OK, people seemed to prefer to be here but I would say that's because it's more relaxed here, more friendly and far less rigid than BBL was. Why is that the fault of this site? Look elsewhere, my friend. On a personal note, Bart and I had a falling-out over the autocratic way he ran BBL. Believe me, it was sometimes difficult to be a moderator there and not cross swords with him. Having said that, Bart and I sorted out our differences years ago the last time he was at Newark and we talked face-to-face. BBL closed years ago, Bart's moved on, Wim's moved on - it seems to me like you're the only one who hasn't. As far as welcoming you to the site is concerned, you sought information here (despite your feelings of disloyalty) and I answered you chapter and verse. That was my/our welcome to you and you've thrown it back in our faces. It's your choice what you do from now on - I really couldn't care less... 8)
Hi Arjan. Welcome. I hope any subtext in earlier responses re BBL was imagined rather than real. The CPL project was/is far more narrowly defined than BBL as we focus on pressure & intended to provide the same reference structure with ease of access & contribution as CCS. Never set up to compete or replace any other site. There are still plenty other sites out there, either static, forum or facebook group & more still appear. It's the internet. I'd be pleased to see BBL revived. What issues any member may have with BBL is between them & BBL & nothing to do with CPL so as said earlier Bygones are good. I'm pleased you were able to get an answer to your question. CPL is here if you have any more.
@David I'm sorry if I offended you, I realy do appreciate the information you provided and I want to deeply thank you for it. @Ross I thank you for your welcome, I realy do. But beeing accused of imagening things in ones first threads upon a website isn't fun at all and doesn't feel welcome. I guess I have been away from this side of the internet for to long to understand it's etiquette, but in the regions where I normaly reside it is considered rude that, when someone makes a topic and has a discussion about the past, someone only posts: Where I'm from this is called trolling and thread stealing. This is considered impropper and childish behavior and looked upon with a very dim view. Sorry if I tried to defend myself. furthermore: I don't think I implied that this site has anything to do with the downfall of BBL. I tried to be thankfull, but get accused of beeing ungratefull. I try to defend my thread from derailing and get a smack in the face for it. So, no, I don't feel welcome. But I do thank you for the information you provided. ...
My comment was a hope not an accusation Arjan & was not solely directed at you. I guess there is more re this BBL thing than I'm aware off. WimVe comments mean nothing much to me while they obviously do to you. I find your comments as baffling as those you made on CCS re the launch of CPL re back-stabbing, etc. As for thread derailment. It's a common issue but I'd stop short in most cases of calling it rude. Whatever you may think Arjan you're still welcome & I'm pleased to have met you in the past.
Yes, exactly the same here. In fairness, it wasn't Wim who first mentioned BBL and Wim's comment was in reply to that person. I took the original mention of BBL to be entirely innocent and Wim's response to it completely without guile and meaning no more than BBL closed down some years ago. I certainly detected no trolling or attempt at derailment. The question regarding SDR globes had been asked and already answered by then so the thread was, effectively ended, hence a little thread drift was of no account. Anyway, Arjan, you are a lamp collector and therefore welcome here. If you do get to Newark again, please come to my tent and we'll have something to eat and crack a can or three... 8)
I have read it the way I thought it was meant and reacted that way. Yes the question was answered. Dunno if the tread was over. I guess that question can only be answered by those who read the thread and judge it by their own standards. As said, bygones... No harm was done and let's just leave it at that. I'll bring a sixpack next time I swi(m)ng by. Any brand that you fancy?
As it turns out, no it wasn't. I was looking around for something else yesterday morning and I found another Tilley 2081 globe - so that's two I have and therefore one is definitely spare. Arjan, it's got your name on it so if you want it, please let me know in the next few days and we can work something out. If not, I'll take it to Newark and see if there's any interest down there...
Does that offer still stand David? If so? I am verry happy to take you up on your offer. Shall I give you a pm?
