One of many lanterns picked up on the weekend. I've been trying to cut back...really I have. lol It's nothing fantastic but...Anyways...an AGM RL-2. Been looking for one of these to match up with my AGM stove. I think they are both about the same age mid 1950's vintage. They should get along okay.
For a mid 50's lamp it looks in great nick. I don't know anything about these lamps. I can't tell by the photo if it's a single mantle or double mantle lamp. Is it petrol (gas) or kerosene?
Single mantle gasoline. Yes in fairly good shape. Yard sale find. I don't usually stop at too many yard sales but saw some old cast iron tools laid out on the driveway when I slowly drove by. Had to stop when I saw that. Asked about lanterns and was told that yes there was some lanterns but they were still in the old shop. Asked if I could see them and he said yes. Walking to the shop the owner told me they had bought the property as is as part of the sales agreement and that meant cleaning up the "junk". He had the foresight to see some value in the "junk" left behind hence the yard sale. He told me his wife just wanted to get a scrap bin in. Anyways...I got 7 lanterns all 50's vintage I think and left 6 sitting there 3 complete and 3 carcasses if I remember rightly. I was rummaging around in the dark with just my phone as light. Pulled them out into the daylight and made the deal from there. I might have to go back for the others. Strangely they were all fueled up and I mean a FULL fuel up. As soon as I removed the fuel caps fuel came out with the residual pressure. Fuel smelled bad so had been in them obviously for years. Maybe whoever had owned them was preparing for the Apocalypse and wanted to be ready. I've already got 5 burning and won't light the last 2 Coleman's which are real clean and most definitely will light so why bother. I can post a group shot if you want but thought that they really aren't all that old or rare.
That sounds like a good find. It doesn't matter if they are old or rare, we always like photos of lamps. The more the better. You better go back for the rest in case they do end up getting thrown out. At least they can be passed on to other collectors once saved.
Alexx, Often what one doesn't think about when they have lamps that is common to them, will be of interest to someone like myself that has never seen one before. You seem to trip over the lamps where you are but here in Australia... I found the story behind how you got the lamps and the places you find them very interesting. I live on a small island and if someone has a garage sale (I think that is the equivalent to your yard sale) you have to wear armoured plating and be wary of old ladies with baseball bats. Garage sales are usually cleaned out pretty quick. I used to hope to find old lamps on this island. I've never seen one lamp on this island except at my place. Never be afraid to post pics of what you think are just so so lamps. Others may not.
Okay...here's the 7 picked up. The red Coleman 200 is dated 1959 was actually dry of fuel forgot about that as I brought it into the house right away. I also bought 3 long buck saws with original handles and 3 signs so I had pretty much shot the proverbial $$$ budget and I was actually going to pass on the red Coleman but it is such a nice clean example that decided to buy it too. I lit the nickel bottom Coleman 200 also dated 1959 as it had a mantle tied on. The nickel bottom green top Coleman is 242B dated 1951 and in great shape never lit it but it will light. And lit the rest. Burgundy is the AGM RL-2...Black and orange is AGM but I see no model number the light blue is JC Higgins also don't see any model number and the last lime green looking one is an AFC never heard of that one. I'll go back and rescue the stragglers. It's the decent thing to do.
@Matty I've lived in this area my whole life and it once was mostly small towns and lots of small family operated farms. The small farms are almost all gone now eaten up with an unrelenting suburban sprawl being pushed up the valley from Vancouver. As the old farms and old houses come down the lanterns pop up. What's a guy to do??? lol
