Hello All, First post on here. Thought I would share my recently finnished 300X. Picked this up last year and it was in quite a sorry state with decades of dirt and grime and not much left of the original maroon paint. Decided to repaint it in British Racing Green for the simple reason that I like the colour. I think it turned out rather well.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Pete, the photo was taken before the lamp was lit so unfortunately you're right, it won't look like that for long. But I do intent to use it anyway. Better it's used for it's intended pupose rather than just being a pretty ornament.
I think you'd be better to remove the globe if that's going to be a 'user' They're getting quite rare now and it's from an earlier lantern anyway. I'd put it to one side and keep it safe until you get a lantern that it was designed for - which will very likely come with a replacement globe having no lighting hole...
What type of lantern uses the "globe with a hole"? I have a military one that has this globe, would that be correct? Also, without the hole, how does one prime & light the pre-heater? Willis and Bates decided to cease orders of the globe with the lighting hole in January 1945, based solely on the cost of manufacture. Original globes often marked with the Pyrex logo have hardly any vertical movement in the cage. The new style globes and repros have a good deal of movement, so a lighted match can be placed between the lifted globe to enable lighting of the preheater.
And to add to what Ian said above, the methylated spirit for priming is kept in a special can with a long spout. To prime a lantern fitted with a later globe (which are about 10mm shorter):- you simply lift it up in the globe cage and put the spout on the spirit can through the gap at the bottom. Same with the match... (sorry about the crappy pic - the autofocus on my camera is kaput. But you get the idea, though...)
