It's even less like Scotland - no bagpipes, tartan, kilts or whisky! Sorry, Jeff but it just struck me as rather 'British' with a bit of Norwegian influence. The natives were friendly and didn't resort to another language when we were around. A pretty decent place to be if you ask me, although we had a good day weather-wise...
Hello David, it's not a bad old rock and the weather is good today! Traditionally us Shetlanders classed ourselves as British rather than Scottish but with a strong Norse heritage. The Yorkshire Dales have similar place names because of the Norse heritage there and i also found many similarities in the local dialects.

There are many influences in Shetland, there are buildings here which pre date the Egyptian pyramids and those are the Pictish brochs and there were brochs all around Shetland, many are now in ruins as the stones were reused to build dykes and croft buildings, the first two links below show two which are in good nick and the third link may also be of interest. Shetlandic like all dialects reflects the history of the place, Norse then Lowland Scots then English. I think this must be the first one you linked to, Jeff - Clickimin broch:- It was just on the very outskirts of Lerwick itself. We didn't approach it but just took photographs from the road where the coach parked. We spent much more time at a ruined castle and museum of Shetland life a bit further on...
