Good day all picked up this X246 at auction + monitor stove. I believe they where from Newbury County Council. is the x246 a 1957 model ? And anyone around that can see what model /date for the monitor stove weird hex nut on pump?
Newbury is a town in Berkshire so it wouldn't have a County Council. Nice lantern. Has it ever been lit? If it had been from 1957 it would have had the date stamped underneath the tank. As Jeff says, it's earlier than that, though. The stove looks as if it could be army surplus and may well be dated (around 1956-ish?) with the crow's foot or broad arrow mark...
Quite right David it was District Council. It appears to have had an attempt at being lit . They burned of the mantle and left a bit of soot behind and some blackening of the vapouriser. all cleaned up nicely vapouriser nice bright steel .Inside the burner is positively clean brass colour.threads all brassy bright . I don't know if I am in never been used territory, or only used once . The stove again is from Newbury District council. That's what is written on both boxes. May be they used these in emergency's ? No crows foot marks. Thank you David for your reply
Few more pics if anyone interested when in to the archives found same and was hoping to see the date stamped on the side of the box no such joy assuming 1952 !
The burn marks on the vapouriser will probably be due to it being test-fired at the factory before fitting to the lantern or sent for sale. They all were. Otherwise, it looks as though the lantern may have been lit once to check it before being put into the stores at Newbury. It's up to you whether you light it or not. Personally, I wouldn't but then I've got plenty of other lanterns to light if I needed to (which I don't!)...
That seems right David as it had a mantle remains. Tilley would not have sent it out with soot deposits on burner ( I hope ) so to be correct it has been lit once to check it . The truth is i got this very cheap and I will sell it on, so that I may get some more,to fettle, as I enjoy the sometimes very challenging refurbishing, then fettle. So thank you again David .
No such thing as crap in the lantern lamp world . You can always use some part of that to fix up another so never throw stuff away . Bob
No problem Bob that is why other half gently remind me that it is building up it sort of grows around you and hey presto I cant find anything !!! But got the point thanks Bob Michael
Not a problem for me looking at losses . Might get some money back But nice for those that actually make money Thanks Matthew.
That was to be introduced in 2017 and to be legislated for in the Finance Bill 2017. Given recent changes, we shall have to see if it makes it into legislation. Until then you need to be appropriately registered with the HMRC to 'buy to sell' on eBay or at any other venue. The HMRC can make ones life hell if they want.
The stove has the characteristics of a product from Samuel Heath & Sons, Birmingham. The filler cap with non-removable vent screw (won't get lost in the field), and the hexagonal nut which allows the whole pump to be removed for NRV replacement. Good stoves.
Thank you Derek I originally thought that, but when it said Monitor on it. I was sidetracked ? So some sort of Company change over, that would explain things. Thank you for that most kind Regards Michael
