Hi all, recently I found this nice lantern in very good shape. However, I've never seen one of those before. At the first glance it looks like one of those nickeled MEWA 300HK (pretty similar to the older Hasag 351L) which must have been built mainly for export, according to the quality mark on the top nut. Due to these similarities I guess that it was made in GDR after the war. But this one is different, since it employs a torch preheater in addition to the meths cup and a vaporizer with a Preston Loop. Due to these features it also has a different globe cage in the style known from Petromax et al. There's no manufacturing or date stamp besides the "HASAG Made in Germany" on the side of the fount. Even the top nut is unstamped. If somebody has more information on this lantern it would be much appreciated. And perhaps it is in the wrong gallery and has a wrong name. Who knows? Here are some pictures: The base part of the torch preheater is identical to these used at Petromax Rapid. And so is the construction of the vaporizer. The excenter drives the spring loaded base valve with a push rod, and the top part of the veporizer is screwed on with a coupling nut. However, the needle and jet is identical to those used at other MEWA and HASAG lanterns. And the Meths cup is similar to those used at the post-war HASAG 252 lanterns.
It seems to be designed and manufactured to a very high standard, Martin. No corners were cut to save on cost or labour. A very handsome lantern!
Wow it looks nice Martin . I really like the preheater and the way they made the hood and the connection to the cage. Can it be a prototype of some sort? It all looks very genuine Hasag and with a overall impression of pre war 2. Well-saved. Claus C
