I am less and less impressed with the reproduction items I've come across.

I've just received a brass repro pre-heater plate for a 300x I bought from Julian Shaw, the item is so rough that it needs grinding and polishing to bring it up to standard.

I'm sending it back and starting with a genuine plated brass part and grinding and polishing that instead.

    Not good enough...

You're right, it does look rough in those photos, I should have paid more attention, but it's still not acceptable for a new part regardless of price.

If I need to grind and polish a part I'll find one in the pile or buy a used one.

Does this reproduced item not deserve a thread of its own rather than being hidden away in this one which is non-specific in nature?

I thought that was the point of this sub-forum - so that we could get an idea of the quality of reproduced items and help us to spot them on lamps and lanterns...

Probably David, but I don't have a brass original to compare it to, so I just tacked it on to this thread.

This has now been split off. I have a chrome one i could photo but would rather compare to a brass one. I've never seen an original brass one - anyone got one?

:-k Maybe I've seen a brass one without noticing it but all mine seem to be either chrome plated or aluminium.

I think it's nice to have an original pictured next to the reproduction but not 'de rigeur'. Sometimes it's just good to know that items have been reproduced and to have an opinion as to the quality, value for money, where they're available from, and so on...

As far as I know the plain brass plate was only supplied with the early Bialaddin 300x that had the stamping on the hood and not the collar, hence the rarity.

Primarily this gallery is a reference for collectors to compare repro against the real thing to help make informed identifications & purchases. The other info re quality, source is of course useful too.

This is an original solid brass Preheater from a 300X, this lamp does have the lettering on the hood, others I have do not but still have the brass plate.
