I prefer to find my lamps locally, but it's been quiet on the lamp front here for months. However, i did find a wick lamp and some Tilley mantles recently, they were in a local junk shop. The lamp dates from 1890 to 1920 and it will require a full restoration. There was also a 1946 Tilley instruction book.
Well, you live on a pretty remote island, Jeff and I think it's pretty safe to assume no-one's taking lamps and lanterns there these days. Inevitably, then, there's going to be a small, finite number present and once they're all found, well, you'll find yourself in the situation you do. Then there was that eBay seller woman 'lisag' who exported most of the junky ones from the island. I think she may be calling herself 'adgcansell' now...
Himself is still listing but I believe he and his wife have separated now. Very low feedback score he has too.
Jeff, actually meant to comment on your wick lamp which is very like my great grannie's one except that the column on hers is onyx or something similar. Burner is different too so really it is nothing like her one!
Hello Jean, I hoping that the lamp will restore well enough and I have cleaned up part of it's stand and part of the stem and the brass appears to be of good quality and it was originally highly polished and lacquered, some of the original lacquer is still visible. The restoration shall have to wait until it's weather to be in my shed. The mantles will be useful and original paperwork is always welcome.
Hello David, the Lerwick Uphellyaa takes place this coming Tuesday and it will be a while yet before i spend time in my shed, i have spent many happy fettling hours in there though.
I visited my favourite junk shop today and i found this interesting British made Coleman glass, i have a few of these glasses, but they don't turn up often, so if the price is right i buy them, Jeff.
I paid another visit to my favourite junk shop today and found these two Coleman lamps, they were made in Canada. I'm unable to see the dates yet, but i reckon that they are model 169K and i shall restore them through time.
The one on the right looks early different control knob plain one on left later knob . good find . Bob .
Thanks Phil and i'm glad that they are of interest. Hello Bob, yes and it also has the fancy finial on top of the burner and hopefully the date codes will be visible when i clean off the muck and grime.
Relight the latest gift last night.. Also got ahold of a handfull of old stock NRVs that got new washers and pip's. Making and collecting spares for the next one that comes by..
Thanks one and all and I have now been able to view the date codes and the lamp which has the fancy finial and the older valve wheel is dated 3 36, but the 3 is very faint and the other lamp is clearly dated 9 36.
Ahh. Just secured a radius 103 in fair condition with spare mantles and spirit can for under 10£ the hunt continues
Ha-ha, Matt - that's a good one! I nearly fell off my chair laughing... By the way, where is Buenos Ayres? - I hope Juan doesn't notice that...
