Picked this up yesterday, it's in need of some TLC!

Hello Jean, that model does not turn up often and your example should restore well enough!

Very nice find, was it a car boot find? Nothing very exciting ever turns up at car boots around here, my blue Vl was found at a Carboot by the previous owner, but that was not one local to me. ](*,)

    Matthew,

If you really have a V1...

    1379189290-v1_01.jpg

...kindly make sure it's not pointed in a north-easterly direction when you light it.

We did have one of those up here once - around Xmas 1944 IIRC - and it landed right in the middle of a cricket pitch. Blew all the windows out of the pavilion and for years afterwards, you couldn't get the ball to turn properly no matter what you tried. :-&

    Bah! - bloody Hitler...

I wonder if it perhaps not was a V2 if it was that late as around Christmas of 1944.

Still a terrible thing if it ruined any future cricket matches over there.
It totally takes the deeds of your good old philanthropist lad mr. Harris out of perspective...

Yeh I keep it in the garage, just in case David. ;)

Seriously though, I don't have one please don't send the bomb squad round to my door. [-o< They might find the howitzer shell I keep next to the wood stove in the living room. :-s On reflection that doesn't seem like a good place to keep them.

    Sorry Jean. :D

No, definitely a V1 - a V2 would likely have taken out the whole village.

It was air-launched from beneath a Heinkel bomber IIRC and flew up the A1 aimed at either Sunderland docks or Manchester - in which case it should have been flying along the M62 or whatever it was in those days - A62?

Edit - click here and scroll down to 23/24th December 1944.

I wouldn't care to get into a debate regarding Arthur Harris - in war, bad things happen on both sides. It's also far too easy to look on historical events with 20/20 hindsight. Perhaps you might consider that FDR was also a 'philanthropist'...

Matthew, no not found at a car boot sale, I rarely go to these unless I'm short of a book to read. Got it in auction, think I paid far too much for it but was determined to have it.

I like auctions but there always seems to be someone else that wants the same thing. Sounds like you had the same there. The best auctions are the ones without online bidding. ;) :D

Yes, I think that's the essential 'character' of an auction... ;)

I like these heaters, and yours doesn't look like it needs that much doing to it  be nice to see it refurbished and running Jean

    Aah yes, Pulse jets 8)

Made a small valveless one and run it in my mates garage on propane, gave us both a banging headache for a week

I was going to suggest that as your next project, Ray - after your new one, of course. Would have been good at Newark next year...

I saw a small ram-jet once which I think is similar to a pulse-jet but without the vanes at the front. Very impressive from a couple of feet away when going balls-out - the jet, not me...

Ray, I think you need to go to Specsavers! Possibly for you fettlers refurbishing this one would be a walk in the park but this is me remember? More of the enamel has gone just under the reflector than seems from the pics and the back is quite badly rusted. When I have time I will give it a clean and see what needs to be done but any tips appreciated!

jean; if you ever decide you want to part with that heater do let me know as i could use a few items for mine ;the outer guard and the lower panel why someone would remove that panel i haven't a clue ;these are a very simple thing to take a part; even a trade would be fine
