Hi all and specially Coleman specialists Here is what I think to be a Air O lantern from 1919/20 "Air-O-lantern MODEL QL" on base rest MFD by the Coleman lamp Co Wichita ans "patented may 13 1919" on the air tube The lamp was paint gold here is what I found, reading different messages 1916-1918--no patent date on air tube 1919-1920--patent date on air tube 1920--air baffle plate is first used--no baffle plate on mine, 1921--base rest has "Quicklite" punched with the little dots--definitely not mine, The top nut is not drilled, I am right for the date ? You can see the mica cage, I want to redo one but is this model the good one. A friend of mine have this one,
G'day Michel, It is a very nice looking lantern. I'm no expert on Coleman lanterns (or any other for that matter) but here is what Terrance Marsh has to say Link
Hi Michel, I have probably the same lantern in my collection, but not in this good condition. Coleman L327
Hi and thanks for the links Leo ; if I am right, yours is a little post 1921 because the base rest has "Quicklite" punched with the little dots. Nice lantern
Hello Do you have any photos of the underside of the fount? Coleman used embossed lettering and then changed to recessedlettering around the very early 1920s The base of the burner frame, with its hole arrangements also gives clues to the production dates Cheers
Michel. You have it exactly right at 1919-1920. I assume this was found in France because it is the gold painted version which was only sold as an export model to France. I may have got the description wrong because it is possible the tanks were also painted gold and not polished and lacquered but the three I have here are all the same with no hint of paint anywhere on the tanks and two of them had most of the gold paint intact on the globe cages and collars. This finish was continued for the later versions of this type of Coleman in France but not many have ever been found so these are rare things. Nice find in very nice condition. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil I have painted the whole lamp because : - A friend of mine have such a model with more than a hint of gold paint under the collar, all around the plunger. - And as I had to do some tin solder on the fount, this was decided without doubt. Thoskiwi : absolutely no letter anywhere on the lamp
This is good to know. I will have to change the description of these to show them as all painted gold. Thanks ::Neil::.
Hi Neil we can assume the lamp was sold in two versions ; painted or not, (perhaps lackered) because old french people loved the brass finishing.
