Here is my Coleman L327 which came from rural South Australia. I like the exquisite simplicity of this lantern. It came alive easily after some advice from Mackburner and Lamp_Doctor. The cage needed to be treated for rust, so it was painted with rust converter and then silver auto paint. The mica globe is a bit tatty but functional. The major "fettle" for this lantern was cleaning the jet in the generator (vapouriser) and allowing the generator to soak in fuel before lighting: As it came: The tank had no nickel left, so I've polished the brass and lacquered it. I might be able to find somewhere to have it re-plated. Daniel Davis in the USA is going to source a Fred Kunze mica globe and I'll also repair the one that I have. This lantern was probably imported to Australia and sold in the late 1920s. Cheers Tony
...Hi Tony, ...Nice work!.... ...I like the darker Grey/Silver you have used for the Steel work? .....The spray colours I have seen are much lighter and to my eyes are too bright.... ...That reminds me, you resprayed a Tilley 'pork pie' table lamp and used a darker gold than the standard bling......Good stuff !!! Best wishes, PB
Good job Tony . Now onto the next project with the same dedication you put into these lamps, lanterns. Soon you will have a light for every nite to put those chooks to bed . Bob.
Bob The next project will be the other FL6 that I have. Then I won't have to carry a lantern to lock the chooks up - I can just light up the paddock from the verandah! Cheers Tony
My guess would be you have one for every day of the month with spares, and you will need sunglasses to see your way back with an FL6
Dday kindly organised a Fred Kunze globe (chimney) for my L327. Here it is, and fitted: Thanks very much, Dan. Cheers Tony
Yes, David Very nice indeed. And I'm most grateful to Dan for organising the purchase and logistics for me. Cheers Tony
Only if this is a Canadian made lamp. Otherwise it has been brought into the country by an individual. This lamp is amazing. The condition, despite the loss of the chrome is astounding. I don't collect enamel hooded lamps as it's generally too hard to find them in this condition. I have the earlier version of this lamp with the chromed hood, American made. Dan Davis was kind enough to allow me to send a number of lamps, sourced from America, to his place where he posted them in bulk to me. As you know, he is a great bloke. The Fred Kunze Mica globe looks amazing. My mica globe is in roughly the same condition as your original globe. I thought mine look fine until I saw your replacement.
What I know of the lamp is that it spent many decades in rural South Australia. When it arrived in South Australia and from whence, I don't know. I'm assuming it's made in USA, not Canada. Tony
I don't know exactly, from memory, but by 1927 I would expect that it would have a stamp on it indicating made in Canada, if it was made in Canada. Once Coleman Canada began manufacture, their lamps were imported into Australia, American lamps were not. A 1927 American made lamp, of this type, therefore would not have been imported and sold through a retailer in Australia
Matty That's what I always thought. No indication that this lamp was made anywhere other than the USA. Tony
Tony, Why I said a lamp of this type was because I can't remember if lamps only made in the US were imported by our Quicklite Co mates. I knew this model lamp was made by Coleman Canada but I just wanted to cover my behind in case lamps Canada didn't make were imported from America. If there was a case of American made lamps that were not made in Canada being imported, it would have been through the Aussie Quicklite Co.
Tony Very hard to find here in Aust! Well done I found a pre 1925 L327 USA made , recently in Vic all original with mica ! Between yours and mine they are the only pre 30s Coleman lanterns I've seen found in Aust!
Akeepsake Can you try to find out what the history of your lantern is? The reason I ask, is that I am inclined to think that, because of where my L327 was found, I was actually sold new in Australia back in the 20s or early 30s. I'm interested to know whether your one fits the same pattern. Cheers Tony
Hi Tony yes I did try to find out history but being found in a market stall there was no history . I would suggest that USA didn't export these here in the 20s as there would be more of them showing up for sale . I would say they came out privately from USA . As you are well aware Canada Exported in the mid 30s and I have found many Canadian lanterns here that date from 34 onwards. I have seen an Aussie add which depicts a L228 (1929 ) model but this is originally an American Advertisement re used for Australia. These are only assumptions based purely on volume of what has been found here and I'm happy to be proved wrong Cheers
