Hi I'm very new to Tilly's. Just stole one today out of my dads garage cos he has a few that don't work. They were my grandparents lamps/heater as far as I know. I've found a Tilly R1 radiator too but I thought I'd start with a lamp. What parts do I need to get it working? The pump doesn't feel like it's doing anything so all new seals I guess. I haven't found the "burner assembly" yet but i think there is one somewhere. Does anybody have a parts drawing for this so I can see what I'm missing? Also what year is it from roughly? There are no numbers. &5 just says "Tilly lamp table model" on the front.
Have a look here Tilley TL10 1940-46 Your lamp is a Tilley TL10 and probably from the 1940s. You are missing the gallery and burner unit but that is probably lurking in the garage somewhere. I have never seen an instruction leaflet for Tl10 but I do have a copy of the general instructions for Tilley from the 1940s which includes this lamp. After a little googling I think I see what's happened. Someone has put the burner and gallery from the table lamp onto the R1 radiator because it's round in shape and pretty much what I would expect to see on a lamp. The pictures of burner assembly's from working radiators I've seen are completely different to the lamps. Would this be correct?
I think I've solved that mystery. Now where is the best place to get new seals? The control valve is passing. The rubber seat is rock hard. The pump doesn't pump. Basically I'm looking for a full set of seals for safety more than anything else.
You can order a set of seals and washers from "the fettlebox" who advertise regularly on these forums. Forum members receive a discount. The parts are identical in size etc to the original Tilley parts but are made of a superior material. If you decide that you don't want the table lamp, they are rather desirable, values vary greatly according to condition and degree of completeness a look on line will give an idea as to value.
Lampost1 You have unearthed a treasure trove of Tilleys and associated fun. There is a link to "The Fettle Box" on the home page of this forum. As you have a few of these beasts to get going, I suggest that you: 1. Subscribe to CPL if you haven't done so already. That gives you access to documents in the Reference Library; and a discount on purchases from The Fettle Box. 2. I suggest you buy the box set of bits and pieces that is available for Tilleys. That means you will be able to work systematically through your lamps and lanterns. There is a lot of information here if you use the search engine to seek out posts on each particular lamp and problem, but don't hesitate to ask what might appear to be simple questions: better to ask than destroy. Thank you very much. I can't wait to begin. The lamp definitely isn't going anywhere. I've always had a fascination with them since I was a child during power cuts etc (I live on an island in north west of Scotland) I love all things old including antique clocks, classic cars and now my new hobby will be restoring these lamps. I'm hoping to give this one back to my father for Christmas this year in decent condition. Polishing brass can be quite laborious so I thought I'd start early
Yes quite right heater burners only have one air intake tube and all the standard lamp burners have three. Using a lamp gallery on a radiator was sometimes done to give a reflected light on a lamp with a handle which made it easier to carry. In fact later in the 1950s Tilley made a lamp head specifically to do this conversion and in the US they sold the table lamp gallery head as a conversion into the 1960s. ::Neil::
