Hi new seals, new mantel, all clean. 3 min warm with Meths, wanted to give it 12 strokes the it started smoking like a champion, Glass Black, Mantel black, and flames came out the lid ? what have i done wrong or what is wrong please ? Fuel: Peroleum
somebody told me i should mix a little petrol in there because of something to do with the Air mix ? air entry is through the 3 metal pins on top correct ? is it normal that they are screwed right through ?
Gnasher The correct fuel for this lantern is, as Jeff said, pure kerosene (paraffin). Some people mix a bit of Coleman fuel (naphtha), but that is not necessary for this lantern, and at least here in Australia, a waste of money. NEVER mix automobile gasoline - it will ruin your vapouriser eventually. Find yourself good quality kerosene (paraffin). Tony
Gnasher Two questions: 1. When you say "a little bit of benzin/petrol" are you mixing "benzin" with kerosene? If so, what is the ratio of "benzin" to kerosene? 2. Is your mantle staying black after burning at full pressure for along time? If so, it will indicate a problem with your fuel/air mixture. Cheers Tony
I have owned and lit many different make and models of lamp and the popular M320 is probably the easiest and most reliable of them all. Flare-ups and sooting of the glass are usually down to insufficient pre-heating. Brim the spirit cup and don't be tempted to light until the last few seconds of meths 3 to 4 minutes especially in low temperatures and windy conditions. If the mantle gets 'black' patches, a good 30 minute run usually burns these off back to bright. Personally I would just run kerosene/paraffin, there isn't any need for anything else. Remember, once you have finished with the lamp turn the knob upwards to off position otherwise you might get kerosene soaking the pre-heat wick and sooting up again the next time the lamp is lit.
There isn't an "off position" on these lamps, they have no shutoff as there is with Tilleys, the knob just operarates the pricker and should never be used as a control... Leave the vent screw open and the filler cap sligtly loose to prevent self pressurisation. Loosening these also helps preserve the washers as they aren't left permenantly compressed.
