When I got my lamp it had a sharp nail attached to the shaft with a piece of string. I seem to remember it had a purpose. Now I hear reference to a pricker. What is this tool for?

Someone will explain it better than me but the pricker sits inside the vapouriser (the long metal shaft) and the pointed tip is used
to clear the vapourisers jet which can get blocked and is controlled by turning the control knob which raises and lowers the pricker and also turns the lamp on and off.

Was your pricker external to the generator?

Some lanterns did not come with an internal pricker, the US Mil Spec Lantern and the Coleman generator with the circle in the middle are the two that I know of.

    What lamp do you have?
It would be good if you tell us that so it will be more easy to give you the right answer.
Some pictures of the lamp and the pricker or possible needle would be better.
It could be that this pricker/needle do not even belong to the lamp or it might be a spare one for the internal cleaning needle if there is one.

Something that can be described as a nail does not sound like a pricker to me... the top has to be very fine to be a pricker.

    Picture?

    Cheers

Tilley R1 Radiator dressed up like a lamp. It has an internal pricker. But I remember my grandmother using the nail for something and it was tied to the vaporizer.

Could the nail be used to see how much fuel is in the tank? (I think I am posting too much).

G'day Jody, no such thing as too much posting. And a dipstick is possibly right.
