Got given the lantern by a family friend, from what I read so far, these seem to be fairly OK? I did a bit of cleaning this week and have some mantles on order (can't wait).
The question I have is how to identify the date and the model? Below some pictures of the item

So this is the X246A then?
I broke the mantle that was on it when cleaning :rage:. Did do a test fire without the mantle, below an image of the flame, will how it looks when I put a mantle on

No. It is a late X246... nobody understands what the letters after the date mean...

    Cheers

Must have taken a lot of polishing to go right through the speculum coating on that tank. Eesh.

Hi @Cigarman, What I was told by the family member that gave me the lantern is that this was a daily user by his family from the early 60's to about 1979 when they finally got connected to the electricity grid. It's primary use was to light the way to the milk stalls every morning and evening for his daily chores. So it has worked hard and have seen some pretty harsh use. He was quite amused to hear that I am starting to collect these, to him it was a tool to get the job done and nothing more:shock:

You made it shine again. Wear from honest use is a badge of honor on an old lantern.

100% correct Phil, they used to own a milk farm just outside Ermelo, he told me that they had a few other lanterns, but he "got rid" of them years ago :rage: It might have been a Primus

Nice Jacov, at least it comes by it from duty! So many I see on Fleabay are polished to a nubbin from someone with a polishing wheel going nuts. :)
