It has a mantle! I recently acquired an Aladdin 21 C lamp. Here's the story... We were travelling to the coast a week ago and stopped in a little town to look at what they had to offer in the line of antiques. We happened upon a small shop that had the lamp displayed in their window (yeah my wife is quite the enabler!). The owner just got back from a trip to the UK and was unpacking her stock for sale.... The lamp was one of the items she just unpacked 10 minutes prior to our arrival. No pressure lamps though Needless to say I came away with a well packed and boxed lamp. Getting back from our trip, life caught up and I finally got to looking at the lamp more closely. It is a 21C burner on a silver plated fount, the chimney and shade complete. It had no wick and I could that the flame spreader was quite deformed! With the help from a fellow member on this forum, Thanks Phil, I got the necessary and finally put the lamp together. I must say that I kind of like the soft glow and the silence with which it spreads its light. Below some pictures. Oh and... I also got some Veritas mantles from the same shop! they seem pretty old, so I don't think they'll be used anytime soon! The parts needed: The lamp before full assembly with the wick soaking: and the first light up! and running: Thanks Jaco Here are the Veritas mantles:
Hi @eiremax, thanks. The light output is much brighter than a conventional wick lantern, but lower than a pressure lamp. I would estimate it to be about 80cp. It really gives a "soft glow" . Will go nice with some of the older vinyl records.... a glass of wine and some good friends to chat with. The pic in my avatar shows it running for about an hour, fully warmed up. Took this with my cellphone with no flash as the only light in the room. I quite like it! Big thing is that my wife loves it and I'm allowed to run it in the house, no smell at all! Jaco
Hi Nils, I noticed when blowing it out the 1st evening, subsequently I turn the wick really low before blowing it out and keep it at that level not as strong a smell then
Aladdin were rated at 60cp and they will do that if set up right. Some years ago I measured three Aladdin lamps and got an average of 68cp from a pair of model 12s and 65cp from a model 23. ::Neil::
I believe the current production mantles, manufactured by Peerless under contract with Aladdin, are rated at 40cp.
