This is the first version of the Aladdin lantern produced in Australia. This was after supply of the Radius made lantern was not possible due to WW2. The first version is usually with an olive green painted tank and nickel plated collar, glass cage and top. Non plated parts do turn up as well as steel parts.
Hi Nils, I have a Stormproof 1A that is running real rich. Burns outside the mantle, making lots of soot. Other than that it is in generally good condition, but no glass. Am guessing the jet is totally worn out and oversize. Also there is no needle on the top of the control rod. Are any jets available or replacement bits etc (glass shield) that may help getting it to run correctly. It is my late fathers so am keen to get working. I have jet drills down to 0.3mm so could resize the hole if I knew what the factory orifice size for the jet should be. Appreciate any help. Peter
A glass would help retain heat and may improve vaporization. Is the air mixing "J" tube clear no spiders, wasps ? The pricker wire is 0.15mm (I think) (just measured correct) so jet will be a shade larger.
The 'standard' size for a 300cp jet is 0.2mm and the needle about 0.18mm. Aladdin could have sized them a bit smaller even though they call them 300cp. I believe Sands in Melbourne have jets and needles but there might be others who still have stock.
G'day Peter, When I was in Melbourne earlier this year TW Sands were selling pricker and jet for the Aladdin 1A. TW Sands 508 Swanston St Melbourne, Australia.
It's been a while since I looked at this lantern, but from memory the crack wasn't past the base. It's not uncommon to find cracks in the skirt of these first Australian made Aladdins. They obviously worked it out though as I havn't seen these cracks on later versions.
After all the recent discussion about the early 1A lanterns, the title on this post is probably wrong. This is most likely the second version.
