I am the proud owner of a new, never-fired all-brass Santrax 830 lantern. This is a clone of the Petromax/Britelyt 150cp lantern. Some sources indicate that it is made in China in the same factory as the current production Petromax lanterns (I don't really know about that). The lantern came with one Santrax mantle. Don't think I can find a ready supply of thoes mantles. What is a good fit for this size kerosene lantern? Would Coleman #21 mantles work? What is the best solution? Thanks in advance for your advice. Stu S.
Hello and welcome aboard, I reckon that the Coleman 21 mantle will be a bit small, but you could try one. I would check out Coleman's range of mantles and see which of them are rated closest to 150 cp., Jeff.
A Coleman #20 would fit the bill. Made for the Coleman 222 lanterns. I believe the #21 would work and is worth a try though. Santrax lanterns are made in Hong Kong last time I checked. Jeff
These small 150cp lanterns (either Santrax, Geniol, Petromax and others) can have problems with running too cool to keep the vaporisation going properly. A good quality kerosene and a ball shaped mantle work best. I've found that the Optimus 250cp mantle works well on these lanterns. The Santrax 150cp mantle should be available as sensible prices, but from experience the quality can vary.
Just fired up the lantern with the provided Santrax 150cp mantle. I must have done something wrong because the mantle shrunk up too small and the lantern would not operate properly. I did notice that the weave on the Santrax mantle was very loose, and that may be the reason for the excess shrinkage. I tried again with a Coleman #21 mantle I had on hand it it worked much better. The Coleman mantle had a tighter weave. I will have to try a 250cp mantle to see if there is improvement.
When I get a supply of 250cp mantles I will let you know. Should be able to tell using the meter in my Nikon DSLR.
