Hi all, My latest acquisition arrived this morning, a later model FL6 but sadly the base is bulging so needs replacing, i have contacted the seller and am waiting for a reply but how difficult are they to come by and i know its a "how long is a piece of string" sort of question but what would one roughly cost? Thanks.
There are loads of FL6s about - I think I have 14 of them. They come up on eBay all the time but the current trend seems to be to list them on a Buy-It-Now for silly money - like £250 or so. I had one with a leaking baseplate which I soldered up with quite a bit of effort. I reckon replacing the entire baseplate might be a bit of a job but it I suppose it depends on how handy you are with a blowlamp. Maybe replacing the tank would be a better way...
Hi David, That must be some collection if you have 14 of them! Yes mine was an ebay purchase, its not in bad condition apart from the bulging base, it looks like its been painted in a silver hammerite type paint and someone has lined the hood with tin foil to stop it burning the paint i would presume? No sadly i do not have the skill to replace the baseplate, i haven't even learnt to solder yet and don't think for safety reasons i would ever try repairing such a vital part of the lamp, especially after reading about the one that exploded although that was more down to a leak from above the tank, I am not sure what the seller will come back with as yet, so the tanks are not especially hard to come by then and how much do you think i would have to pay for one? Thanks.
Dunno - maybe someone here has a spare tank they'd be prepared to pass on. I've used the FL6s I have to floodlight the local church on special occasions - there's a pic on here somewhere of the Queen's 60th Jubilee in 2012. Edit: here it is:- Maybe I'll have sufficient to get them all the way round the church in 2022. The SL1's already in waiting to illuminate the spire. I've no idea how many lamps, lanterns and stoves I have - maybe 300-400???
I will wait and see what the seller says before i put a wanted add up, i might also try and get a mount for it, I bet that looked nice, i'll try and find it, so the collection isn't finished then I have not seen an SL1 before being a newbie to lamping, i saw an OH-574? on ebay that looked quite nice and there is also an air ministry Bialaddin 300x on there which are apparently rare ish? That is a fair collection, i know my front room and half of the garage is getting pretty full up so 3-400 would need a fair space even if they are all fettled and ready to go!
Yes that looks very nice, quite useful these old lamps aren't they, Those SL1's look smart,not sure one will ever venture into my small collection but you never know, i might trip over one somewhere, there are still bargains to be had, i watched a youtube video from 2013 the other day and he said he got his FL6 from a boot sale for £3, it wasn't in great condition but was all there and still a bargain.
An Sl1 was up for grabs last week or the week before on eBay. Could've been yours for £1200, did need a bit of tender loving care though.
Might it be worth having a replacement tank fabricated ? A non trivial undertaking to make a pressure vessel I know. But keen model engineers make steam boilers for scale model railway and road going steam engines. Might be worth approaching a model engineering society ? Copper is the preferred material rather than steel or brass, usually silver soldered.
Depending on what the seller says i will probably go secondhand as i don't think this one would warrant getting one made, Had a fairly productive evening though, 120 mile round trip (because of roadworks ) but found myself two NOS never been out of the box Aladdin blue flame series 25 heaters and as my sister was only 10 miles further on, got a nice tea cooked for me into the bargain
I've been using an Aladdin like that to heat the house in the evenings this winter. I like the 24 hour run-time on one filling. The Valor 525T and Perfection 735 heaters burn for only about 6-8 hours on a fount-full. It also cooks a lovely pot of soup
I've not used it yet but i've got an Aladdin Aladdinette 2 for those cold days and nights in the off grid garage i rent, it was the fact of not having power in there that got me into paraffinalia in the first place
Boy, you guys on that side of the pond are sooo lucky!! Over here when I find an old lantern (I mean really old) someone has turned it into a flower pot! Humm, 2022 huh Dave?
Your day will come, hopefully you find a hoard! The boys that have been collecting the longest have the best finds and the best contacts but being a newbie i think i do ok all things considered
