Does anyone know how many of these where made? I built this from a NOS 201-720 fount I bought from Old Coleman parts. The burner frame, burner parts, bail handle, directional disc, vent nut and valve assembly are from a NOS green 201-700 lantern. The collar is from a used 201-700. The red vent is from a red 200a that was used once. The red valve wheel is NOS.
I took a detailed video of this lantern and put it on YouTube if you would like to see more detail. Just search for 201-720 on YouTube. I think all of the parts are accurate other than the ventilator bracket may have been black instead of plated.
I saw another 200A with a nickle fount that was 2 of 1975 also on a collector site. I wonder how many were made. I have seen the 201-720 with the original box. I doubt Coleman would have made a box for them with a photo of the 201-720 without selling a lot of them, but you I have only seen a few of them on collector sites and never for sale.
Beautifully done and a very fine video too! I have an original 201-720 lit perhaps once or twice in its box with all the accessories and another that I built up from parts like you did. It is a user-lantern and not nearly as nice as yours is!
I'm trying to understand something you put this franken lantern together. you're asking questions about it. ,, and it's on eBay for sale at a discounted $2000 ?? Whats your point? seriously
Perhaps too much is non-original for this one to be posted in the reference gallery? Or can it still go for a 201-720? If details aren't correct, and may confuse people who search for looks of this type in the future, it might be better off in the Frankies section. Some input from you Coleman experts would be nice, thanks.
Christer, despite the controversy about the owner, I vote that this one should stay. As far as I can tell, he used the same parts that Coleman used for this model, with the exception that the model number printed on the collar is 201-700 (the painted green model) and not the correct 201-720. And besides, it is very pretty!
This Coleman lantern has it all going for it! NOS, Unused, Unfueled, Unfired, Promotional Lantern?, Red, Kerosene, Rare, Nickle Plated, 201, Very Scarce, So Beautiful and the Most Accurate Replica seen before. The preheater cup was only nickle plated in 1975. The collar is 100% accurate. A serious collector looked at my collar, then went home and looked at his 201-720 that he bought with the original box. He told me his collar was exactly the same. The collars only say Model 201 in 1975. A very poor Franken recently sold for $444.00 plus shipping. It had a 200A collar and a 200 burner frame. I asked the seller for details and he could not tell me if the fount was even original. The 75 could not be seen on the bottom of the fount. The seller has sold Coleman Kerosene decals, so I was not interested in it. My replica is a very fine lantern and very accurate. Most anyone would have to have an original next to it to see any differences. I am sure the fount is a NOS 201-720 original. I am sure the other parts are Coleman NOS 201-700 other than Red vent that has been used once or more. The vent holder is nickle plated rather than being painted black which was done in 1975. I like the NOS nickle plated vent holder better. I bought the fount from Mike at Old Coleman Parts along with about $6000 in parts. He assured me the fount was original and NOS. It is or I would have returned it. The watermark around the decal shows me that it is an original NOS 201-720 fount. He said it was the best of the 3 he had. I bought every Ruby Red 200A glass globe he had because no more will be made. The 201-720 Replica is for sale again. I also have all of the accurate instructions, alcohol bottle and everything. I do not have the original box. The instructions are for 201-700 and 201-720. The only differences are the green color fount and ventilator compared to the different red ventilator and nickle plated fount on the very rare promotional 201-720. The only other differences in later 201 lanterns are the vent holder and collar. The asking price is reasonable considering it may be many years before an original will be offered for sale and how accurate and nice this one is with all NOS parts other than the red ventilator.
I am not generally a big fan of reproduction lamps but this one does appear to be good and correct. However what worries me is That implies there are differences. Subtle differences perhaps but right there the maker of this is saying it is not authentic and for that reason alone it should not be in the gallery except perhaps as a Frankie. ::Neil::
There are no differences in this lantern and the original. The fount is original NOS with the watermark on the decal and correct date. I used the same factory sealant to reinstall the valve assembly. The original nickel plated 201 with the red vent used the same collar as the green 201 lantern. I have confirmed this with two collectors who have originals with the original box. All of the parts are identical. There is no way to know it was put together by me and not by the Coleman factory. I recently purchased an early 201 green lantern with a near mint collar. I put it on the lantern. I like it so much better. The only differences in the early and later 201 lanterns are the collar and pre heater cup that I can see. The early 201 had a nickel plated pre heater cup. I found a NOS one while buying parts from a local Coleman dealer. I have 2 that are NOS now. Original from the factory is always the best! I came across the original fount while browsing Old Coleman parts and saw the NOS plated fount. I looked into to it to find that Coleman had made this lantern I had never seen before. I built my own. I doubt any original looks as well as this one. Thank you for being kind and understanding.
I have looked at the ones I have and can confirm that the collar only says 201. The box says 201-720. A good many of these red&nickel 201's were sold in South Africa and they are not considered particularly rare or valuable here, certainly less so than a 206, 231 or 241.
one was posted recently to a Coleman group in Facebook and got a lot of attention... a frankenstein with similar description of how it came together. interesting.
