Hi Guy's At long last i have managed to dig some of my Blanchards out for you to look at, they have been in store for the last 40 years. My family have owned them since the late 1920's, and were still in use up till 1970. I will post some good photo's of them in reference gallery after i have cleaned them up a bit. The two copper ones are pre 1925 Model 1215 made by the "Blanchard" Lamp Co, one of the burners is dated 10 1923. The other two silver looking ones were made by W.T. Barnard, one is a Barnard made model 1215, and the long armed one is a Barnard made model 1217. Jim
Nice collection. Some serious light power there. They look to be in pretty good condition as well. Even after 40 years in store they will run again without too much trouble. ::Neil::
Hi jim well now you got them all out time to get them going again they will certainely brighten up the living room!! Dont think i have seen one of those long arm versions of these lamps before cannot be many around i was not aware they even made one cheers pete
That's great that these lamps belonged to your family since ever. Did Barnard take over Blanchard or it was a completely different company that produced Blanchard designed lamps after Blanchard stopped to work? Juan
Hi Juan, Arthur Blanchard made the "Blanchard" Lamps from about 1907 untill about 1925. Then W.M. Still took over the company and carried on making Blanchard lamps until about the late 1940's At the same time W.T. Barnard, who had worked for Arthur Blanchard at the "Blanchard" Lamp Co ltd up until 1925, set up his own business, as experts specialise in repairs of other makes of lamp, and also making his own version of Blanchard lamps. Which were the same, just a slight change to the tank and arms, so as not to infringe the patent that W.M. Still and Sons had as sole makers of the Blanchard Lamp. W.T. Barnards tanks were spun by W.M. Still, that there is no doubt. W.T.Barnard's lamps, do not have the word Blanchard Lamp on the name plate. W.T.Barnard took over all making of Blanchard's from W.M. Still when they stopped in the late 1940. Jim
Hello Jim, thanks for posting this information! I have found that paperwork on Blanchard is scarce, the earliest which I have is that 1909 article and then some adverts from 1914. Did W T Barnard, produce catalogues? Jeff.
Nice story about Mr Barnard and his old job. And what happened after he bought every Blanchard remaining assets? Did he continue in the business? Also, so sorry to be so curious, but : what for? Home or business/work?
Hi Juan, W.T.Barnard, was still in business making Blanchard parts right up to 1965 when he retired. My family were market traders, so used the lamps to light there stalls, mainly in the winter. Jim
We know the British army had Blanchard lamps during the 1940s because a few hand lamps have turned up with MoD markings and I have a couple of globes marked as MoD and dated 1943. Apart from those as far as I understand it they were pretty well exclusively sold to London market traders although a few may have gone to other end users but I suspect to people who had seen them in use in the London area. I have not seen any advertising later than about 1932 and whilst there may have been some I suspect that the people who wanted them knew where to get them and the demand was sufficient for Walter Barnard not to need to advertise. ::Neil::
Hello, Jim, I wonder if you know of a supplier of the smaller globe for these lamps? All the best, Jim.
