Hi guys, I am restoring a Hasag Polar lantern (without pump) and which i believe is Hasag Polar No. 30A. Can anyone tell me the mechanism of the lantern and instruct how to lit it ? Will be great if someone can tell the exact model number too. Thanks, Aabid
Aabid, from the picture it's difficult to judge what lantern it is exactly, but it is most likely a Polar 11A (250HK) or a Polar 3A (400HK). I feel that it makes no sense to describe the complete restoration or lighting procedure here, but in the subscriber section you can find several documents (part lists, exploded views, instructions) from which you can get everything that is important. Maybe you'll have to adapt documents from other manufacturers (like Petromax) with similar products, but that's no problem. The lamp looks uncomplete. It misses the reflector, globe and most likely the preheating dish and burner. These parts are almost impossible to find nowadays. It could be worth posting some more detailed pics, in particular from the bottom view. Good luck with your fine new project, Martin
I suggest you have a read of this restoration guide for the Petromax 834. It is not directly applicable to your lamp but the design of these donut lamps are all pretty similar: Petromax 834 renovation I wouldn't attempt to light it until it has been dismantled, cleaned, reassembled and tested for leaks.
Thanks James for your advice. The Lantern that i have has no Air Pump. Can you suggest a link for a lantern alike? Cheers!
Dear Martin, i am trying to recreate the missing parts and have also arranged some important missing ones, but i couldn't operate it as there is no Air Pump option in this lantern, without which it is getting really difficult for me to understand how to create pressure. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
I operate the OL51 hanging lamp shown in my avatar with a Lezyne bicycle mini pump that has a flexible hose, works very well. A picture of the pump and how to light it is shown in this thread: Tilley OL51
You should use the bicycle pump with a tube ON the tank filler cap ! But I would first restore the lamp. And get familiar with how it operates. When I see these lanterns put on a surface like this I know something is gone or broke inside. Burner heads (often) stick out underneath.
Aabid, I've got a Standard 590 hanging lamp also without a pump. The filler cap contains a non return valve. I simply use use a bicycle pump with a flexible hose attached, as Stephan E. suggests. Works fine for me with a "Schrader valve adaptor" attached (try to google for it) which I screw onto the filler cap valve. Maybe such a solution will fit your lamp as well. BR, Martin K.
I managed to get the glass chimney which was with a person for over 35 years but no luck with the preheating shell in and around Delhi and ebay.
