As I noticed using the Happy brand mantle on the tilley, the light was not that bright. I then used a coleman mantle which when preburned is thinner (the downside is it is also flimsy) than that original Tilley mantle and it gave off a brighter light. Some observations though is that the coleman mantles I have is a bit short and the diameter half the width of the tilley mantle so when pre-burned to white, the mantles shrink so the coleman mantle is not as bulb or rounded. Still gave off more than 50 watts to the previous 25 watts of light by my estimate. Time to look for BIG or WIDER coleman mantles.

Any suggestions on where to find such mantles?

Sadly Tilley brand mantles will only give out around 150cp instead of the 300cp that is claimed for the lamp. the modern X246b can give even less..!
Use only mantles designed for the Tilley, it is not a good idea, despite what may be advised elsewhere, to use other types of mantle.
I have been testing different mantles on lamps for years and with the correct mantle a Tilley can be blinding..!

Hi Mike, I do have the Tilley mantles but sadly I only get under 25 watts equivalent.

    Hi,
on vapalux and tilley I use petromax type mantles.
    rated at 500CP
I open the bottom end and tie it using a thin brass wire. works well and gives a very good light.
300cp double tie mantles are impossible to find here and 500cp pmax are much more widely available.
last brand used was peerless from the Philippines - very very good white light output.

I do the same as Doron, with good success.
