As per subject line, I am in the market for a pressure fed Paraffin heater to use when camping etc.

    Any thoughts folks?

A lamp provides plenty of heat , but perhaps you do not always want light too. The obvious answer is something like a Tilley R1 radiant heater (look in the reference gallery) but it may be feasible to use a Primus or Optimus type camping stove with a brass radiator dome bell over the burner. Else perhaps some form of metal shroud over the glass globe of the lantern to block the light.

You could do a search for "heater" here and at our sister site Classic Camp Stoves (link at top of page)

None of these options are to be used in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation or your camping trip may prove to be your last...

Multiple choices here! One can go for a Tilley or Vapalux radiant heater, designed to , well, heat. Or one can use any camping stove with a dome heater (or a clay flower pot turned upside down). Another option is to convert any Petromax style lantern into a heater. One can replace the mantle for a stainless steel mesh one, replace the glass globe for a mesh one and even fit a polished SS reflector. I've seen all of these items for sale on ebay but most can be made at home. The lantern can be converted to its original use in a mo.

    Best regards,

    Wim

Petromax 1500...prices are crazy however. I'd go with Wim. The 829 lantern is easily converted to a heater and even a cooker then with the same ease converted back.

Cheer for the suggestions folk, I will look into them and maybe even buy summat soon (though it's looking like more dosh is needed that I had thought).

This video show the fitting of the Petromax Heater and Cooker parts. When the 829 is running the 500cp jet it puts out serious heat. This can obviously be lowered by using 350 or 250 jets.

My choice would be a Bialaddin Bowl fire, slightly smaller than an R1 but seems to produce a bit more heat plus i like the build quality and bargains do turn up, i expect an auction could possibly find you a really cheap example,
I need to start going to auctions!
