Already bought them, but are they any good? Seller says the 500/600 mantles may be used also with the 300CP lamps. What do you guys think? Haavar
I have found that Butterfly 500cp., mantles are much smaller than Anchor 500cp., mantles once they are burned off and I have used one on a 300cp., lantern and it did work, but it was a little large. It's better to obtain the proper size of mantles if you can, but the Butterfly mantles will do if that's all that you have, Jeff.
It seems like downloaded images from the imageoptimizer always ends up like .png on my android - thus cannot be viewed fullsize. Found an app though that does the conversion.
They are "good", like Coleman 21s are "good". I use them for testing. On the other hand, there are mantles out there that can be described as "great", and I'd encourage you to shop around and experiment.
Hi Havvar Go for the Anchor 500 CP mantles ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370838126429?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 In my experience the Butterfly mantles are ok for anything between 150 to 350 CP lamps even though they are rated higher , but will do at a push for a 500 cp The Butterfly mantles do come up a bit small when burned in & I have even used them on Coleman CQ type petrol lamps with great sucess Best regards Stu PS your tool is on the way 8)
Thanks! I still wonder - what are the consequenses of the mantle-ball being small(er), except the obvious reduced light? I guess a 500 lampnozzle lets through more fuel than the 300-nozzle. So a larger combustion areal or volume may be needed - thus the larger mantle? Would the smaller Butterflies result in incomplete combustion and raisened CO - levels?
I have fitted smaller than recommended mantles to lanterns and lamps and the light is still bright, because the burner is making full use of the mantle's surface and the lamps and lanterns burned cleanly, if a smaller mantle caused an improper burn then the mantle would blacken. The light output will be reduced if to large a mantle is fitted. However, it's best to use the proper size of mantle if possible, Jeff.
I have fitted Butterfly 500cp mantles to a Coleman dual fuel 285-700 and also a Coleman 201 and in both they work well and produce a very bright light. Once burned in they tend to form a good, slightly elongated shape. I have some peerless mantles but I haven't tried them yet. Having said all that, I'm not an expert and I've only been collecting a short while, but this is what I've found so far.
I think it rather depends on who made the particular batch of Butterfly mantles. I'm quite sure that most Butterfly (and Anchor) 500 CP mantles are counterfeit. You can find the following mantles in Butterfly packaging 300-400 CP, 500 CP and thoriated 500-600 CP. The 300-400 CP mantles seem to be the most consistent in terms of quality, the 500 CP mantles are all over the place, the Thoriated 500-600 CP mantles are rather nice, very much like Peerless, but I have my doubts they are genuine Butterfly items. Hi everyone. Here's my whole range Butterfly mantles that i've tested on my Petromax 826, Butterfly 350cp and Aida Express 1350 lanterns. Other than their rated CPs, they do have differences in terms of the "whiteness" of their light outputs. (Not to be confused with actual luminance or brightness). All of them are radioactive(tested with a Geiger counter). The 500c.p. is the least 'white'...a yellowish white with a slight reddish/orange hue at best. The others appeared whiter due to less yellow but more towards a greenish-white colour. Any comments? Anyone?
