My very modest collection of lanterns and stoves now has a permanent home in my office. It's nice to get them out of the dampness in the garage/workshop which long term would do the steel cases and founts no favours at all. It's also nice to be able to get to everything so easily. Of course, if the collection grows, I may need to add more shelving, but that couldn't happen... could it?

Better start measuring the walls for more shelves...

I'll have trouble adding shelves to the other wall as that's my map wall! But you're right Phil, it's only a matter of time before I have to add extra capacity! As it is, my three Tilley lamps are still in the living room.

When we moved to our new house in Glenfinnan I realised I could fit most of Scotland on the wall using old Ordnance Survey 'Routemaster' maps so I did! I've since replaced all the sheets I destroyed to create my masterpiece!

PS. Excuse the dreadful image quality. My phone camera is rubbish in low light.

Put some cup hooks in the ceiling and hang the lamps.

Cup hooks work well, just make sure you screw into a rafter and not just the pasterboard ---- nothing worse than things going bump in the night

A small book case on the floor might be the answer.

You can start with the wall space next to the window.
And then the wall without map (nice !)
    Hook the ceiling
one, maybe two on your desk
    ...

    But beware!
the wall shelf could end like this:

And the book case(s) could somewhen look like this:
    PICT1384a.jpg

A real mess and no room to put more lamps/lanterns any more. They must be breeding when unattended...

Hi I have over 300 lanterns and no more space!! Keep it simple and keep it small.

It could also get out of control and end up looking like this:

.....and there was me thinking I had quite a few lanterns - you guys are in a completely different league! Impressive isn't the word!!! Phil, by any standards, that is one hell of a lot of lanterns, and Martin, I love the Petromax/Hipolito/Primus style lanterns! I'm on the track of a couple of similar models at the moment (an Anchor 950 and Petromax model) and I think I'm doing well!!!

...and Stuart, that is a nice collection of very tidy Tilley lamps - the 'pork pie' model is very pretty indeed!

In the living room they do well too. But they do not breed that fast when watched :).

Gerard, I think you are aiming for a kind of ideal lantern aesthetic with your collection! It is an impressive display of functional beauty... technology and art working together to make life better!

If you hang them in the rafters, hang'em high! Have just fixed an Optimus 200 that fell after being hit with some piece of wood. 20180109_163236_resized.jpg

I think we all got the same problem, they're everywhere in the house.

I quite like the idea of a display cabinet with glass doors rather than just open shelves. Not only does it keep out the dust but also the gefingerpoken.

Two observations from viewing this thread. One is that there are some splendid collections out there. Two, comparatively I have a lot of junk! :(
That being said just went and did a count of lanterns in the house. I was sure there were no more than ten but the actual body count was twenty one. How did that happen? Actually only have display space for ten lanterns with the others haphazardly placed here and there. It surprises me that lanterns I proudly displayed only months ago have been relegated to the outside shop. The turnover rate is still high. Being kind of new to all this I guess it will settle down?

I don't know if I would call what you have in your collection Junk, you have some desirable lanterns and accessories.

    Only time will tell... ;)

You would be amazed how many lanterns you can hang along the top of walls!

I believe you've seen the pics, have you not?

I'm not a piccie person any more, give me a good SLR with centre weighted metering or a spotmeter, some AGFA Colour* or Ilford Monochrome film and Rodinal and I'll give you some great prints. Give me anything digital and I'll give you a pile of s***e

    HD
