I have what I presume is a gummed-up NRV in a 241G. I have tried soaking the valve for days on end in carb cleaner and also vinegar down the pump bore. Neither helped. It occurs to me, though, that since it is the 'business end' of the valve that is gummed up, it would be best to apply the 'ungumming medicine' directly to the problem area ie by filling the fount with white vinegar or similar. I have not seen this possibility suggested elsewhere on this forum so am wondering if there is a good reason for NOT going that route.

The good reason not to fill the fount is that it will not work. Colman uses air tube at the end of the pump tube. It sounds as if the tube is clogged. To clear the tube, the nrv needs to come out. A bike cable, used as a snake, and your carb. cleaner inserted and pulled back & forth to clear any obstruction.

Hi Nonzo, I had a similar issue with my 241G, they are unlike the rest of the Coleman lanterns in the sense that they have a NRV with a pring and pip, no air tube. I managed to get mine removed from the pump tube and had to replace the pip and spring. I have some NOS NRV's, let me know if you need and i'll send some your way

The 241G NRV is pretty much the same as a Primus NRV. Soaking will not help. The NRV has to be removed and the rubber pip in the NRV needs to be replaced.

Many thanks for some helpful advice. And it's nice to see that some of the help is local! Ok, so now I now that soaking won't help. So the next step is to remove the valve. I do not have a removal tool but I am happy to try to make one. The problem is that I have never even seen an NRV so it's going to be very difficult to make up something that fits properly. Jaco, referring to your very kind offer, I presume that the NOS NRV is the same/similar to the original 241G valve? If so and you can let me have one, I will know what the tool has to fit. Can you PM me perhaps at conical@telkomsa.net to arrange? I'm in Port Alfred. Cheers.

Have you asked on the South African Wick & Mantle lamp collectors forum Google Groups whether there is someone in your vicinity that could assist you?

Hi Phil, I was unaware of the SA Wick & Mantle group. I have visited the site briefly and will explore more fully when time permits. Thanks for the help.
