Hi, This is my latest addition to my small collection. Bought off ebay for £50 all in so the most I've ever spent on a lamp so hope I've got a half decent deal. The question is how best to go about restoring it to its former glory? Also is it a mkIII? What I've read seems to indicate that it is. Thanks

Just to get this clear in my mind:- Mark I - Pork-pie tank, annular lower cage ring, short handle, post-type handle attachments Mark II - Pork pie tank, annular lower cage ring, longer handle, post-type handle attachments Mark III - Pork pie tank, wire lower cage ring, wire loop handle attachments Mark IV - Dome tank, wire lower cage ring, wire loop handle attachments Mark V - Dome tank, clip-type handle attachment Maybe there are more variations I can't bring to mind at the moment...
I've ordered one of the kits from Fettlebox that comes in a plastic case and contains enough seals to do a few lamps
The three types of pork pie X246 are :- 1st all brass globe cage and hood. 2nd steel globe cage brass hood. 3rd steel globe cage brown enamell steel hood. There are as you say two handle variations for the 1st type. ::Neil::
Is this a Mark 2.5 or what? It's got the earlier three piece hood (steel cap, though) on a steel globe cage with wire loop handle attachment...
I've got one just like that, waiting its turn to be fettled. Same cage, same hood, same cap. Without the Bialaddin spirit cup and wire thingy though
This is the first time I have had this lantern. On the tank there is what I think is called a pressure pip, which I've not seen before. Is there anything I need to do with this when I come to change seals etc? Ta
There's not much more to do with the pressure 'tit' or pip beyond ignoring it, mostly. In theory, you have the correct pressure in the tank when the inner and outer parts are level. However, they're notoriously inaccurate and often weep i.e. leak slightly. If it does, I've heard of folk who solder them up, although you'd have to be careful not to over-heat the area because I believe they're soldered into the tank. I think you can also use epoxy adhesive to seal them up. Having said that, I've never had to do either...
When I first joined this site I thought it was somewhat serious. I see now that is not the case. lol I'll have a piece of that Pork Pie. It looks good! YUM!
I hadn't guessed. But I do see the resemblance now. Pork Pie's aren't a big thing in my neck of the world otherwise I would of got it for sure because I do like to eat!
My service kit has arrived from the fettlebox so I'm going to tackle the lamp this week. There are a couple of blobs of what looks to be paint on the tank, which you can't see from the pics so was wondering which is the best way of removing them without damaging the tank in any way?
