Picked up this Australian 249 Scout off of a very nice guy from Vancouver Island. Got it delivered to the mainland by another very nice guy. Not sure if they frequent this site but both are fellow collectors. Thanks guys! A very clean nice burning dated 4/57 made in Australia by arrangement with Coleman Canada. My birthday lantern and it's a keeper!
That is a very good find! If you have a Canadian 249, could you check whether the vent nuts are interchangeable?
I have both the Australian and the Canadian 249 Scout versions and the vent hood nuts are interchangeable. In fact they are also interchangeable with the 242B Australian and Canadian versions.
Thanks for the info, Pete. I was curious because of a question Steve Retherford asked on CCF: View Single Post - Australian 249 Scout - Coleman Collectors Forum
I see Keith just posted a very comprehensive answer: View Single Post - Australian 249 Scout - Coleman Collectors Forum
Thanks gents. It's my new favorite! Now to throw a wrench into the works...vent nuts do NOT interchange on mine. The Australian stud is a larger size. Aussie vent nut actually just slides down onto the Canadian vent stud. Canadian dated C41 and the Aussie dated 4/57.
Just checked my canadian stuff dated from 242k /35 aussie one fits canada 249 /46 aussie one fits .So you must have something different in your canadian model . Bob .
I checked my Coleman 249s and 242Bs and they all had the same size vent nut/stud. 249 Canada A/46 249 Australia 2/51 242B Canada A/38 242B Australia 7/51 242B Australia 6/56
My nuts all seem the same as your lot ...... also I like them tight, not too tight mind ...... perhaps snug would be a better word.......
The vent nuts when running should be at least half a turn loose or more otherwise the vent chips around nut , Bob
Yeah, I seen a lot of vents chipped under those nuts ..... I even tried fibre washers but they just burnt out.
Best bet, don't tighten it too much. Nice lantern. They are really a great find and it appears to be in very good condition!
Yes I’ve been dabbling with Coleman 249s and 242Bs lately. I’ve been impressed by their manufacturing standards and I’m enjoying fettling the Canadian and Australian versions.
