Hello folks I have a problem with my Vapalux M320 I follow the lighting instructions everything seems good but then when I go to pump doz times to bring more pressure for full brightness 1/ the plunger will not stay in, it pushes back out to full length 2/ then fuel comes pouring out between the plunger cap and the shaft ! So i replace the plunger leather but still have the same problem ? be greatly appreciated if anyone can help thanks Ian
Sounds like the Non Return Valve is leaking, its probably perished due to age, service kits can be bought from The Fettle Box on here.
At the bottom of the pump tube there is a screw slot in the end of the check valve. Unscrew it and you will remove the check valve which needs a new rubber pip. Looks a bit like this one which is from an Aladdin lantern. Only difference is the Vapalux has a screw slot but the Aladdin has a Primus type fitter. ::Neil::
As Neil says, the problem is with the NRV at the bottom of the pump tube. It's designed to let air in but prevent fuel from getting out. If you have one of those hand punches with a rotating head you'll find that one of the punches is the correct size - at least it is on mine - then your can punch out your own pip from a viton or nitrile sheet or washer. It's possible that the spring and pip holder are simply sticking and a disassembly and clean might solve it. However, if you've got the NRV apart, you might as well replace the pip. If the spring is shot, a replacement can be made from the cut-down spring from a ball-point pen. The NRVs can sometimes be a sod to unscrew. Make use you use a well fitting screwdriver. Once you've got it out, the lead sealing washer may come with it. Try not to disturb it as the NRV needs a good seal when it goes back in. You don't say how long you've had the lamp but even a 'New Old Stock' lamp can have hardened pips and seals. Terry
G'day @Sheepsfoot and welcome. Here are links to a couple of posts discussing how to remove the NRV. Vapalux 320 NRV - Some Questions About Them! A few hints and tips please Good luck and keep us informed of your progress or lack there of. Also pictures are always welcome and help when there is a problem.
@Sheepsfoot If you need a pip for the NRV and you don’t have viton or nitrile I can make one for you. Cheers Tony
I cut a short piece from a slightly oversized o ring and forced it into the holder. Then I put it in a drill and using fine waterpaper, I make the pip slightly domed. Has worked for me o far.
Thankyou everyone for your replies and help , I actually had ordered a washer kit from eBay but just replaced the pump leather thinking it must be the problem . You were right, the problem was the non- return valve. I replaced the rubbers and actually serviced the rest of the lantern with new washers after watching Wilshireman on YouTube. ...thanks again fellas, she's shining bright as i write ... ... and no leaks !
