Came across this on the bay. (Auction has ended so I think it's ok to post about it). Never seen a globe like this one. Anyone know if it's a genuine Tilley item and if so what is the purpose of the hole in the side?

I assumed it was just damage to the globe. If it was deliberately put in it would be a pretty silly place to put a hole as the wind would blow in and mess up the flame and mantle.

It's not the best the best of pictures but it does look to me to be a prefectly round hole with a smooth edge so I don't think it's it's been caused by damage. Can't imagine why it would be made that way either. Very odd.

In my opinion the globe is off a interior gas light.
I've seen this type of globe before, the hole would be for lighting gas mantle for models without a pilot light.

The globe is very similar to a standard 182.
Have you compare and check the measures?
I have seen this on other brands, Optimus and Phoebus for example. They are kero burning lamps that has to be pre-heated but and I guess the hole is there just to making it easier to light the lamp after the spirit has burn out.
The alternative is adding more spirit and then re-light, with a small explosion as a consequence.
