From what I've seen on the news, it seems particularly hot right now around Sydney - I hope no-one here is caught up in that...
@David Shouksmith First this (9 April 2018): Sydney has its hottest April day on record and the endless summer looks set to continue - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Followed by this: Sydney bushfires: expert warns more planning needed in wake of intense weekend conditions - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Tony
So far we are having a much needed cooler wettish autumn. I hope the trend continues as our dams are still at only about 20% of capacity. We are just at the beginning of the rainy season, so there is hope for good rains in the catchment areas.
@phaedrus42 I hope the rain comes. I’ve been watching the situation in the Cape. Good luck. @ROBBO55 My visiting relatives were delayed at Sydney airport due to the recent fires in the south. Many years ago I was near Pearl Beach, on your side of Sydney, during a big bushfire in the Brisbane Waters area. Some of us were very lucky the wind changed as the front was raging up the slope from Patonga. That sandstone country sure can generate heat! Cheers Tony
Bring on winter ....... I got the fire wood ready, projects lined up so bring it on .... not that it gets real cold here in Toowoomba, but cold enough.
Pete, I see you had a low of 6C last year for the first time since 2011. Looks like most winters it does not drop below 8C there. We're supposed to have a Mediterranean climate here in Cape Town but it gets both hotter and colder here than in Toowoomba. The only thing you don't have there are beaches!
@Wim I love the flowing fruit trees in spring. G'day Tony, was that the 1994 fires? certainly sounds like it. The fire got to within a meter of my shed but the lawn helped to keep it a bit further from the house. It was an interesting time.
@ROBBO55 It was while I was at University (we had a field station at Pearl Beech) so probably late 70s. Tony
@Tony Press Late 70's, 1994 it's a never ending cycle we learn to live with. Bummer! I don't have a real cold winter compared to others here but at least we do have one. Which means we get a spring as well.
Trio tested last week in garden. Petromax 250cp, Aladdin 12, Belgian railways signal lantern. PX and Belgian from the 50ties, not sure about the Aladdin ,,willi
Summer is fast approaching in the Western Highlands of Scotland, or it is around where I live at least. The bats have emerged from their long Winter hibernation and have begun feeding on midges that have started to band together in small groups under the branches where it's damp. Soon these clouds will grow into dark swirling storms of biting insect misery... that's when we'll know that the Summer has truly arrived!
Not too many midgies here in God’s own shire. Went puffin hunting at the coast yesterday and we were almost blown off the path. Chilly wind it was too.
In the garden with a Vapalux. It needs fettling, because it looses the pressure quickly. Regards willi
@eiremax The beer is a Clausthaler extra herb. @primaxel you will get one, or a Bolten Alt , if you come over . Bring some Lanterns for illumination. :-)
