Although I've managed to source cheap Paraffin/heating oil (cheers Trojandog) does anyone know where I can get relatively cheap meths? all the places near me only stock the little 0.5l bottles of the purple variety. When our troop have all 15 lamps on the go we do get through the stuff!

(we also use it for Trangia stoves as well!)

Try your local Toolstation - I think 2 litres may have been a smidgen over £6 last time I bought any, 2-3 years ago. Still not cheap but better than buying it in the smaller bottles.

    Edit: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p99550

I haven't checked but Screwfix might be another source...

Edit: - No, just 500ml bottles at a higher price:-

In the UK you can often find bioethanol cheaper than meths...

Cheaper at point of sale, maybe, but not necessarily so in terms of the total impact on the environment.

    Just sayin'...

    Thanks for all the help.
TBH I didn't even think of fleabay for meths !

Best I can find is just over £15 for 5 litres and works out at 1.59 for 500ml. Certainly better than the local DIY stores etc..

That is an interesting statement David and no doubt you have made it drawing on your background in chemistry.
Would you care to explain a little more?

I suspect that David may be wondering what is used to Denature the ethanol, or possibly the use of the Bio prefix on almost anything to convince us all how good the product is for us and the World at large.

Just remove the wicks from the pre heater clips and put some caterers chaffing gel in them instead - Does the same job and safer if kids are playing about with it than meths,

    No, not really.

I suspect people have already made up their minds about this issue (or had their minds made up for them, perhaps) and arguing the toss here won't change anything, if previous experience is anything to go by...

    OK David

I did not know it was a contentious issue on CPL.
It sounds like it has been discussed before.
I have no views at all on the subject as I know nothing about it.

I asked your point of view purely out of interest and also because I know you will have good reasons for saying what you did.
Maybe you can chat to me about it when we next meet.

I'm not aware it's a contentious issue here, Trevor, and I've no knowledge it's been discussed here either. I was going on what's happened in relation to similar topics over at CCS. No-one's views are ever changed and there's a real danger of a bust-up.

My main point was a general one - simply that it anything's cheap at the point of sale, it's almost always because someone or something has paid the price earlier on in the production chain. If anyone's interested in the specifics, there are plenty of articles to be consulted in the media...

Hi Bill. There is a guy called Peter who lives near the Conquest Hospital, Hastings, who last year was selling Methanol for 70p a litre in 25 litre containers. It's what I use for all my priming. If it's of interest, send me a message and I'll reply with his phone number.

Nothing wrong with Methanol, except that it can be quite aggressive to some paints and materials. It is a part of Cellulose Thinners, and a major part of Model Aircraft fuel. The models finish has to be fuel resistant.

The first result in Google when searching Methylated Spirits is a place called Rest Express. 4x5 litres for just under £40. Shipping is a few quid more unless you make order over £60.

I used them several years ago, on my last bottle now! Best price for Meths I've seen.

Toolstation had/have 2 litre bottles for just over £6 IIRC - much better value!

Edit: - almost £7 now but still much better value than the 500ml bottles...
    Methylated Spirit 2L

But Home Bargains seems to be the place to go - thanks Ray... :D/

La Hacienda BioEthanol works just as well as Meths. It's surprising the alkys aren't drinking it.
    Maybe they are

My local Home Bargains store has 500ml for £1 which seems pretty good value.

Well, I guess that the prices stated would be a little 'expensive' as compared to what I could get here.
Over here, its an equivalent of £0.8/litre of methylated spirit, denatured alcohol or whatever you would call it.
    Any local hardware stores.

I can certainly recommended "rest express" as suggested earlier in this thread.
£42 for 20 litres, 4 packs each of 5 litres. At present, I think that I paid less than that last year.
Delivery is free subject to a minimum order.
I purchased paraffin from them also at a competitive price.
