I frequently used to refer to the country flags of posters in order to give appropriate advice or comment based on their country of residence.

Sadly this information is not currently available.

As a work-around I have added my location to my signature line.
Some members like @Tony Press have had this for a long time.

I would like to suggest that other members consider doing the same.

What say you: Aye or Nay?

Seems perfectly reasonable to me... :p

Mind you, I'm not sure why it was necessary to remove them just as a result of the GDPR which came into force recently - seems a bit 'overkill' if you ask me. Just one look at my avatar and you can tell where I'm from. Oh, wait...

Signature lines are not visible in smartphone view.
    Or maybe only to subscribers.

It's the former, Willi; no signature is shown in the simpler smartphone layout.

Temp removed - they will be back once I have sorted the compliance issue. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think it was necessary. Happy to talk to any GDPR consultants or specialists in the membership.

Quite understandable, Ross; no criticism intended! This just does a neat end-run around the compliance issue;):)

I'm sure you're correct to err on the side of caution, Ross. The advice I've been given (admittedly for a non-profit making organisation, which CCS/CPL may not be considered to be, although we do have a compulsory annual subscription) is that with regard to personal data published by the organisation, I (as the Secretary and therefore 'publisher'), must be able to answer 'yes' to three questions:-

    - Does it have a legitimate purpose? A purpose will typically be legitimate if the data will be used for one of the group's normal activities as a membership organisation.
    - Is it necessary for that purpose? It will typically be necessary if there is no other practical way to achieve the same result which would involve less use of personal data.
    - Is including it a fair balance of members' rights against the group's rights? It will typically be a fair balance if it falls within what members of the group would expect to happen to their data.

These do seem to be somewhat thin on the ground...

Indeed it does, Phil, but it's not a fool-proof way to get around this issue. As bp4willi pointed out above, it doesn't work all the time.
Nowadays many people just use smart phones, and with the simpler display there, signature lines doesn't show, so they won't be helped by this.
But atleast it works in most cases.

Location under your name/avatar is useful too & new members have to enter that on registering. The option to show that will also be coming back.

I was so glad to see the word ‘vinyl’ at the end of your post Derek.
