Here are the Tito Landi "classic" storm lamps. These were built in tin-plated iron, no doubt these are economic lamps. 80/91 francs against 190/195 francs for a n°42 (1938 prices) they were proposed in 3 powers : 40 (n°20) 120 or 200 candels (n°21) here we can see 2 models ; with and without shut-off knob. Without shut-off obliges to lift the glass and blow very hard on the jet or introduce something small to cut the spray of gasoline vapor (as on wick lamps) this lamp was proposed with a parabol to allows, i think, some inspection works and with a red glass for roads or works signalisation.
Hello everyone I just found this lantern yesterday I'm not sure if it would be a Tito Landi carbide lantern? May not be the same model above. I would appreciate any information thank you Agostino
The burner looks Tito Landi but I doubt it's carbide. They use either essence i.e. petrol/gasoline or alcohol for fuel. There's a big wick in the tank that takes fuel up into a vapourisation chamber which is heated by conduction from the fuel burning in the mantle above. There are no original mantles to be had anywhere so you'll have to cobble something up. One good point is that it has the yoke at the top which is where the mantle hangs from. These are held in by gravity only and are often missing...
Hi Agostino @adelcoro @David Shouksmith There are original Tito Landi mantles to be found now and then on eBay.fr I think you could use Aladdin upright mantles depending on what size burner you have. Attached you find comparison among different mantles! /Conny
Impressive collection ! Problem with feabay is that you never know what you get. That is in which state. Mantles are delicate and people who have taken out the mantle for the picture must put them back too. Then they must be shipped >> CMM (courier mantle mash) is a common disease !
thank you for the information everyone I will definitely need to find the proper mantle, but this one will be a challenge.!! Yesterday I cleaned it up and managed to get some blue flame on the burner. I could only get this flame without the gas tip! if I reinstall the gas tip I don't get any flame at all The gas tip was cleaned and so was the brass filter insert I need to work on it again this evening Agostino
A regular gaslight mantle will work, and they are easy to obtain. E.g. Aladdin gaslight mantles. They are too long, but that doesn't matter. You just need to gently release it from it's lower holder so it just have the wire at the top remaining to hang it on the fork of your lantern: The jet on your lamp look very small, so I would guess you got the gasoline version rather than the alcohol one. Are you running it on gasoline/Coleman fuel?
Carlsson thanks for getting back to me I've been trying with alcohol with no success now I will try with Coleman fuel. thanks for the tip on the mantle I will probably get some Aladdin mantle's or fabricate one here at home Agostino
Agostino, I'm convinced that you will get a better result with Coleman fuel. Fingers crossed! Let us know how it goes. /Christer
