Hi everyone, This is all new to me but recently my elderly next door neighbour gave me his old lamp when clearing out his garage, After lots of Internet research a few spare parts and a good clean it's all up and running! What a beautiful thing it is! I'm a very proud owner.
Thanks Colin, I didn't realise how much some of these can sell for! It's still got its original glass and box! I have told him it's potential value but he's just glad it's gone to a good home. No way will I ever be selling it! They really are a beautiful thing to own.

It's possible! Maybe I'll pick one up in a junk shop, perhaps it would be good to take on a real challenge as this one didn't take much work.
My favourite Optimus lantern. I have had several and they never dissapoint. Also the first pressure lamp I ever saw and worked with. Came across two when I joined a Scout group in 1965 and used them for camping many times. ::Neil::
Hi Neil, I would like to use this lamp every now and again but I'm just wondering how safe it is to use it with the original glass in place? They seem to produce a lot of heat when running and the last thing I want is for the glass to go! I did wonder about buying a coleman glass which apparently fits just for when it's in use! Do you think this is a good idea?
Perhaps yes although I have never had a glass break in use on one of these and I have in the past used them a lot. Coleman and Optimus globes are almost the same and very often can be exchanged BUT The critical fitter size is internal for Optimus and external for Coleman and I have found one or two that will not fit the "wrong" lamp. ::Neil::

I guess you never know what's around the corner! I can't believe that two weeks ago I never knew these things existed. My next door neighbour is getting quite frail and not really capable of doing anything with it, also he knows I love doing things up and getting things working. He was so happy to see it running again, he used to use it when travelling Europe with his late wife.
I've got another question! Is it obvious when the mantle needs replacing? Do bits drop off eventually or is there something else to look out for? Thanks
@Martinw Dont operate your lantern with a mantle that has a hole (eg 1/4 inch) or split in it. The escaping gas can break your glass (globe; chimney). Cheers Tony
I found on a Primus 1060 that the Coleman globe I used needed to be turned upside down. Obviously small differences from one end to the other. As for mantles, give it a quick check before lighting to see if there are any holes or damage. No damage then your good to go. Mostly, the only way mantles get damaged is through mechanical influence i.e. a very rough bump or fingers getting too close.
