It's a JOKE, Conny - not meant to be taken seriously at all and certainly not as intimidation. Why would anyone? It started out simply as light-hearted banter between Neil McRae and Fil Graff. Neil referred to the objects of Fil's passion as 'wickie-crap'; Fil retaliated by referring to Neil's passion as 'gas-bombs'. It's harmless banter, teasing, joshing, leg-pulling, a gentle wind-up between people who know each other well - that's it; no more, no less. Nothing to get serious about. Surely you have that in Sweden? Jeez, does collecting lamps have to be serious all the time - is there no room for humour in this hobby? But on reflection, maybe that's where I've been going wrong all these years... Generally, here, we're not - that's why it's called 'Classic Pressure Lamps' - and hence the suggestion of somewhere else where wick-fed lamps could be dealt with. Personally, I wouldn't want it here but a little button at the top (such as there is to take people to Classic Camp Stoves) would be perfectly acceptable. Why don't you start the new 'Wick Lamp' site, Conny?
Oddly enough, Derek, in general it seems to travel better over at CCS than here at CPL. Draw your own conclusions...
I coined the term wicky crap many years ago and it was a very British mildly humorous shot at people who favoured lamps that could just about save you from bumping into the furniture and little else whereas I collected REAL lamps that gave a useful light. Most folk realised it was indeed just my way of saying I'm not interested in wick fed technology. In truth I do appreciate the years of research and development that went into creating some clever and beautiful lamps but I have a problem of space that means I litterally don't have room to gather any of them in so I have always pretty well ignored this aspect of lighting. I am not all that interested in upright mantle lamps either and I can't explain that, It's just how it is. I do regret the term and rarely use it now but I can't unsay it. British humour tends not to translate well and I can well understand that some folk around the world might find it offensive for which I can only apologise. ::Neil::
Bah, people without a sense of humor punish themselves with the lack. I say that as a proud wickie crap owner. I only own two pressure lanterns. Five if you include propane. Easily 3 and possibly 4x that in wick appliances.
Yes, the (...insert name of country/continent/landmass of your choice...) sense of humour; it's no laughing matter. It's important to read the smiies / emoticons / yellowheads with the text. Just to be clear, the ones above indicate humour rather than offence so the remark is not to be taken seriously. That's how it's sent and I can't be responsible for how it lands everywhere with everybody. Personally, I'm secure enough not to be offended if anyone calls the objects of my passion 'gas bombs' or whatever...
IMHO, this site would benefit from the addition of a section for wick type lamps. Many are interested in oil lamps in general, not JUST pressure lamps. It is a bitt silly in my view to refer to wick lamps as "crap" they are different tools for different jobs. It is a bit like stating that bicycles are crap if compared to cars, they are different modes of transport each with its own merits. The addition of a wick lamp section to this site would induce me to become a paid up member.
I did read the whole thread, and appreciate that "crap" remarks were made or intended to be taken in a light hearted way. I was merely adding my voice to those opposed to such remarks, though it is not a matter of great importance. What about adding a wick lamp forum ?
It is right that wick lamps be discussed in the forum? In the lamp lighters lounge they are fine - they are lamps after all. A topic of their own breaks the site description. Except for blow lamps - er? <awkward> so also OK in lounge. Discussion point - I have some very nice candles...and now? I hope I wouldn't be ejected from the lounge for a wick lamp post - they have gone on for a long time. An upcycling lamp electrocution story would achieve a complete ban - hopefully. My candles are better than your candles - yawn. I use them when lamps are unavailable - los endos.
for those who don't know, and I admit it freely... "Bardic railway lamp" Wassat then? I could search - but you started it..
Bardic railway lamps, a fine piece of engineering. Has the four different coloured aspects like the earlier paraffin fuelled lamps but battery powered. Everyone should have one in their collection, or holding a door open.
A scandalous calumny if ever there was one!! I do own a four-aspect Bardic lamp just like the one Matt showed and I used it on the railway (Home - Tanfield Railway :: The Worlds Oldest Railway) just last weekend and also for the next two weekends at least. I even used wickie lamps at the same time - they were crap, naturally, but did the job I suppose...
This is a "Pressure Lamps" forum. People are encouraged to start a 'wickie crap' website for themselves.
In a way it's a pity, though battery powered stuff does little for me. Paraffin and a match type lamps are well suited to be collectable, and maybe should be added to the thread that Jeff started just over seven years ago: 3 Mantle Lamps. Maybe rename it "Wickie ####" I'm easy either way - I won't show mine if you won't show yours . . . .
