I've been examining the examples of the Petromax 821 "Baby" lanterns in the reference gallery and it would seem that there were two production periods; one from about 1929 to 1940 and then a much later version like the one above. The control wheel is very similar to the red&black Hipolito wheel and the word Baby also appears on the glass globe. Yet the hood is in the same style as the pre-war version.

Was Gibst, Petromax-experten?

 

The pre-war style of pump knob and pump cap has also been retained I see.

 

The Petromax 821 'Baby' along with the Aida 233 are my favourite lanterns. Both of them are just so pretty!

 

Beautiful example in the original post. Mine looks like it survived Chernobyl..... only just

 

Good grief, that looks wrecked! Does it work... or is it fully fettled now?

 

@MarkC , yours also looks to be one of the post-war examples. I'm sure you could bring it back to life again.

 

If anything it looks worse after a bath @nep036 helped me out with a replacement hood. The stress cracks on the bottom are quite extensive too.
Dark nights here for the next few months so time to focus on some projects.

Challenge accepted

 

Stress cracks in the brass were often found on lanterns made in the Hipolito factory in the latter 1960s. The Hipolito style wheel on the OP example is more evidence in support of the hypothesis that the 2nd generation 821 Baby was manufactured there.
