    Hi All,

I've finally got round to fettling a Tilley Guardsman but I've come across a problem I can't sort out. I've changed all the seals and washers and followed the excellent Broadsword youtube video. When I lit the lantern, pre-heated it, pressurised it and 'switched' it on paraffin came flooding out of the pump handle with the pump handle itself coming out to full extension. I'm a bit stumped so if anyone can help me out I'd be much obliged :)

    Thanks in advance.

The NRV (non-return valve) at the lower end of the pump requires further fettling...

When this happened to me - albeit on a crappier 246A pump - It turned out I'd put the NRV back in, in the wrong place...:roll::doh:

Unscrew the end from the pump body. There you should find a spring and a small brass cup with a spigot on the base which holds a small disc washer. The spring should fit over the spigot and be placed with the washer facing the small aperture in the centre of the base of the pump. If seated correctly this should stop any pressure/fuel from entering the pump body.

You can also try reversing the washer to see if it seats better and also give the spring a small stretch.

Good luck and please let us know how you fare.

    Regards Broadlander

I've finally got it lit without paraffin spilling out everywhere although I've a slight bubbling around where the pump itself screws into the housing and it wasn't burning particularly brightly either. Further work is needed I fear...

I always test the main body and workings of my lamps under water under pressure once i've changed all the seals etc, much cleaner than trying when filled with fuel and you can have as many dunks as you need with no issues except having to build pressure again, i've found quite often that the spring has lost its strength no matter how much i stretch it, i wish i could buy some new ones in bulk if anyone knows where?
