    HI,
Having just joined the forum, i thought i would say hello.

Currently i have 3 Tilleys which i am planning to get back into working order. I did buy some service kits, seals, ,mantle etc a few years ago and misplaced them. Well i have found them and plan to get them fettled.

So i have a red one (Guardsman) , and a gold one that i purchased from Fleabay a good few years ago. By colors i am referring to the tank section.

I also have a chrome one that my Dad used to use when i was lad. Can remember touching the mantle and it disintegrating........ Then denying all knowledge.

So i have watched a few youtube tutorials and am going to take the plunge on replacing the seals on the 3 of them. I need to order a heater and jar for the start up. I see Tilley still sell them.

Anyways i will post some pictures up and let you know how i get on with them.

    Cheers
    Martin

    Where are you located?
Low Fell should be in England but I am not familiar with the flag in your profile.

    Welcome to the forum.

Seals and washers are available right here from The Fettle Box and are superior quality to the Tilley genuine ones.

Wicks and jars are available from www.base-camp.co.uk and www.tilleylampsandstoves.com.

Plenty of advice and information here should you require it.

    Regards Jeremy

Ordered 3 washer/seal kits from Fettlebox, hoping i don't need the little washer with the dimple/raised bit on it as they don't seem to sell them.

Low Fell is just south of Gateshead (which is south of Newcastle on the river Tyne). One of my daughters lives in Low Fell and it's dangerously close to here in GL... ;)

:-k I don't recall the Guardsman ever being produced with a red tank. I think red paint was only ever on the X246B and that lantern will need the shaped NRV washer i.e. the square one with rounded corners and the 'pip' where it fits onto the spring.

    A picture would help...

I meant to put a ? after Guardsman, haven't a clue which one it is, hence brackets, but lacking the ? it appeared to be a statement rather than a query.

Your Geography is correct ha. Nice place Low Fell, yep very close to GL

Guardsmans (Guardsmen? Guardpersons?) have four vertical globe cage supports coming from the tank. The next model, the X246A (1962-64), has four angled/cranked supports coming from the top of the tank. The next model, the X246B (1964-yesterday) has four angled globe supports welded to a chrome disc held onto the top of the tank by a single knurled nut in the centre.

You can date your lanterns if they were produced after late 1956 by the date code stamped underneath the tank - something like 573XB would indicate May 1973. We don't really know what the letters represent but they generally go with the model type...

    Welcome to CPL.
The square NRV seals with the pip do appear on the Bay. I've bought a few and they seem to work fine. Pictures always useful with questions :content:

G'day @Martin Renwick and welcome to CPL. A new set of seals should see them all working again. Provided the vapourisers haven't reached their used by date.

B&Q (other stores available) will probably have both, but could be found cheaper elsewhere. Depends on how much you are looking to buy.... some petrol filling stations sell paraffin as heating oil by the drum or off pump. Check its heating oil and not Gas oil which is diesel.

Excellent, it will do to be going on with, for my test lighting. The local allotment shop used to sell it years ago. Might pop by and see if they still do

This is one of my Tilleys, is it meant to be gold?

Also can you put a bit of citronella lamp fuel in with the Paraffin to deter the Midges?

Hi Martin, lamp fuel is sometimes a slightly heavier fraction than paraffin, so not recommended. Also, any dopes (like the citronella scent) tend to clog up vapourizers more quickly so I'd rather advice against its use. Besides, the heat generated in the vap. would most probably break down the scent dope anyway.

    Best regards,

    Wim

Gold? Yes originally painted a bright brassy gold colour. Plastikote Brass is about as close as you can get. ::Neil::
