When I started collecting Tilleys and X246s in particular, I kind of wondered why you would paint gold coloured brass with gold coloured paint! It seems a bit bonkers, but... it was the best solution in the long run. Brass tarnished relatively quickly and clear lacquers get dull and can flake. I've polished one X246 as the paint surface was so bad but I lacquered it afterwards and it's held up so far. I have a buffing wheel though... it's best not to use Brasso or quite a few of the other household metal cleaners as they can begin to chemically attack the surface.
@Martin Renwick Unless you know where you can get meths at less than £3 per litre, try Bio ethanol from B&Q. £6 for 2 litres, it does the same job and 2 litres should last you quite a while. Henry.
Yes good advice Colin thanks. I might try buffing it back, as it does look quite sorry as it is. Once i start stripping them etc i will upload how i get on. Should this be in another thread?
I use paint stripper but I don't leave it on too long and wash it thoroughly afterwards, then buff it on my wheel. That usually does the trick!
Hello, Looks like an X246 Guardsman, 1950-54. Wickie lamps are perfect for your Citronella burning Edit - seems the web didn't want to show me the whole thread so the last on I could see I answered, then it showed me the posts in between
So here are 2 of my lamps, starting to fettle the gold one. All the bits and bobs i ordered have arrived. So watching Broadlanders vids. Needle was a a bit bent, so straightened that and cleaned the carbon from it. Maybe a little to vigorously as the spring now moves quite a bit. Will this affect performance?
Replaced all the seals/washers etc. I have placed the control valve at 90' to the pump, is this correct? All the old bits of washers etc Now to go and get some Paraffin
Bought some Paraffin at Homebase 8-90 for 4L, well shocked. It will do till i can get some form the allotment shop which is meant to sell it. 3-00 for Meths from Tool Station. Bloke didn't get the joke of oh do you have a chilled bottle.
Well glad i tried to light it in the garage, bit of a flame out. The mantle seemed to catch on fire from the preheater. Took the canopy off and the paraffin was jetting out the end of the pipe, so turned that off thus working out which way was on or off. Is the paraffin meant to jet out the top?
Also just noticed i am getting a very fine jet form the top when the control valve is switched off. Replaced the seals/washers as per. Any ideas. Going to leave it till tomorrow now. Thanks in advance
First of all, I leave my Guardsman lanterns with the pump/filler cap left open and the control valve open so the internal pressure can equalise with the ambient air pressure. When I light the lamp I prime it with the control valve open and only tighten the pump ring at the last minute before I start pumping. This usually works, but if you close the pump too early you can get fuel jetting out of the vaporiser too soon causing flame outs and fuel soaked mantles.

Going back to your comment about citronella and midges, I have always found that the heat sent out from a Tilley is enough to see off thousands of the little fellas, drawn in by the light
Thanks for the tips. I have not went back to trying to light it as other things came up. Will update once i do.
